Fixing Rock Rash

So I知 not usually one to really focus on aesthetics. However, I made the mistake of purchasing black wheels a year ago and after a lot of trail use over rocks they all have significant rock rash. What are folks doing to repair this?

I知 not looking for showroom clean here just passable from 5 ft away. I致e tried some satin flat black touch up paint but it doesn稚 seem to have the coverage I知 looking for. Thoughts?

Admittedly never tried it on wheels (but have on other metal), but what about permanent marker or a paint pen?

file and sand it as well as you can. model paint works well and theres tons of colors to match it. or nail polish.

Yeah like Honda250xtitan said find your preferred touch up color and prep it before applying. I use some Toyota black touch up I bought by mistake and it matches decently if you don't look to close

A couple suggestions:

1. Insane curb rash alloy wheel refurbish - restoration - YouTube

2. There are many places you can get wheels refurbished to like new, often on an exchange basis. Hub Cap Heaven and Wheel Enhancement come to mind.

3. You might consider getting different tires. For example, the BFG KO2 tires have a wider tread (in stock sizes) than many other brands. Thus the tires grab the edge of the rock so your car doesn't slide down the side of the rock to damage the wheels.

Sand it smooth first.

I agree on the sand and buff comment. My wife curb rashed some black wheels on her car and I took a dremmel grinding wheel and smoothed it out. The satin black Krylon then blended back in. Probably depends on the shade of "satin" black too.

If "rash" was a concern, I'd never drive the truck.

Currently using a paint pen and it doesn稚 seem to stick. I don稚 think a marker will be durable enough.

I don’t think tires will matter in my scenario. Sometime I like to squeeze through tight spaces and also use my wheels as a pivot point. Lol

Hahah yeah as you can see by the condition of my rashed up sliders and scratched up bodywork I don稚 usually care about trail damage. The rock rash just drives me crazy because it makes me think of curb rash every time I see it.

Some tires do have better rim protection than others. Ironically, KO2s have just about none. MTRs had a big thick lip that stuck out like 1/2 an inch from the rim. It does help reduce rock rash, but not this time...
