2017 Tacoma TRD Off Road or 2014 4Runner SR5 Premium...

A debate as old as time...Looking at either a 2017 Tacoma TRD Off Road with 110,000 KM or 2014 4Runner SR5 Premium with 260,000 KM. I have a 2011 4Runner and love it, but life has changed and I find myself wishing I had a truck to haul stuff more and more, while also looking at the fact that the '11 is about to crack the 300,000 mark and resale value will go down. There are a lot of things I like about the 4Runner (dry and covered cargo area, more space, and from what I can tell a bit more of a polished interior and ride). With that being said, I've always been drawn to Tacoma's and have found a pretty good deal on a 2014 4Runner and 2017 Tacoma Off Road, with about a $9,000 CAD difference in price.

Knowing myself, I typically tend to keep vehicles for 3-5 years and then switch/upgrade, so looking at this as both a daily driver experience as well as a resale value play.

Would love to hear others experience and if anyone has any insights into the '17 Off Roads.

Thanks!

for me, the only thing that would have gotten me into a tacoma, rather than a 4runner, was the 6 spd.

going from a 2nd gen to a 3rd, i lost the stick, so moving into a 5th gen wasn't any extra loss... except for the nagging 6 spd in the taco.

i love my '16 4runner... i just wish they would put the 3rd pedal back.

how often do you haul is the real question? If its a few times a year go with the 4runner. I do find myself wanting a truck when I do projects around the house but i manage with the 4runner fine. I have 3 kids and they fit fine in the middle row, if I were to buy a truck it would be a tundra or sierra. Suv (sequioa or yukon) is more practical 95% of the time for the family though.

@JoeBand , I hear you there! the 4R is relatively sluggish but I have a Pedal Commander which has been a treat. I know the Taco's have the 3.5L, which there are a lot of mixed opinions on, especially with the gearing...
@osugsxr I'm finding we're doing a lot more "dirty" work that a cargo box would be better suited for: dump runs, hay runs, lumber, etc. For context, we moved to some property and have a bit of a hobby farm so the 4R interior was starting to take a bit of a beating with everything going on. No kids (yet) but the dog loves rear window...

Aside from the creator comforts, I'm really trying to figure out what is going to be the better option resale wise based on the age and KM's. The Tacoma is listed at roughly $5,000 below market price in my area, and the 4Runner is about $2,000 below. I know vehicles are a depreciating asset but this is just the way my mind works haha.
