Compare The Tires

I was surfing YouTube and came across this channel called Compare The Tire. Very well made videos. It does a lot of comparison video as well as individual tire testing. The best part is it shows you how the tires are made on the inside which the vast majority of videos don’t show you.

I feel they do a very good job in explaining the strength and weaknesses of each tire.

Here are a few.

KO2 vs Cooper Discover

KO2 vs Nitto Grappler
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A4OLyi7hvhw&feature=youtu.be

Fallen Wildpeaks vs General Grabbers

No offense but I would say the opposite. He reads the tire brochures and gives his "expert" commentary. His offroad assessment of KO2s and RGs is laughable.

I'm going to agree with this comment. I have a very hard time taking tire advice from a person who's never driven a vehicle with any of the tires he's reviewing. He also seems to be quite biased towards KO2s, even though both the Wildpeaks and Ridge Grapplers are superior tires in nearly every way.

Ridge Grapplers are great for show trucks and are quiet on the the highway. They aren’t durable enough for heavy off-road use and have no advantages over KO2s for off-road traction. They are borderline dangerous with deep wet snow too.

There is a reason KO2s are so popular, it’s because they work. Not saying they are the best off-road though but at least they have a strong carcass on e load rated versions.

Curious where you are basing that Ridge Grappler durability idea off of. I've seen a lot of Ridge Grapplers on the trail and wheeled hard. Multiple friends have them and swear by them and I can't remember any of them having flats or anything. They are pretty popular. Id put them on the same level as KO2s. I'd rather have a KO2 because I just have more personal experience with them and like them, but I would have no reservations with running a Ridge.

Just curious as to what you've seen. I think the Nitto "show truck" brand that they once were is long gone, personally.

It's great to hear that you have had positive experiences with the Nitto Ridge Grappler tires, and I appreciate your input! However, tire durability can vary greatly depending on the type of vehicle, driving conditions, maintenance, and how the tires are driven. Like any other tire, the durability of Nitto Ridge Grappler tires can vary based on individual use and driving conditions.

I’m not a big fan of YT “experts”. The vast majority of search return videos I’ve seen when I’m looking for information are immature, amateur, and just plain annoying.

Tell them to wheel harder ;P I’m basing my opinion on direct experience using RGs for two years in variable conditions.

Here they are clogged with mud 100 miles from pavement when we were traversing the dead zone in the Baja Peninsula. They fared no better than any normal AT in mud and it took me a couple of hours to get out of this.

Here they are being sliced open on a mildly rocky trail in Northern California 3 of the 4 tires had sidewall gashes. This one had a failed sidewall , was running 20 psi.

Here they are failing me with lateral snow traction up on a shelf road in the backcountry of Washington State. This was the last straw for me.

So yeah I’ve used them and won’t be running them again.

Thanks for the great feedback. I agree with you that the KO2 are much better. I had a set of Grapplers on my 4Runner and had problems with them slipping in the rain. I replaced them with KO2. Been happy ever since.

As far as the videos goes, they have their flaws but I do like that they show how the tires are built on the inside. Very few tire video show this and I think it’s helpful when trying to decide on a new tire.

Not saying KO2s are great either btw. I regret buying them but they are certainly better than Ridge Grapplers for off-road use. My favorite do it all tire still remains the Cooper ST Maxx

As long as people have reasonable expectations on how AT's should perform, they all do pretty well (Toyo, Falken, BFG). Some perform better in some environments than others, and there are definitely some compromises that need to be made when choosing tires.

I like Ko'2 in E load for the following reason:
1. the carcass is extremely durable (E load).
2. they are long lasting.
3. relatively quiet through their life (end of life, or year 6 it gets a bit louder, still quieter than my current MT).
4. severe weather rating.
5. lightweight (although BFG kinda cheats by making their tires smaller than advertised).

I also like Toyo's RT's, but i cant get over the weight of them. They are pretty much bombproof.

No experience with RG's. Most of my buddies run Toyo's, BFG, and falkens so i can only speak for those.
