Possible to retrofit 2022 lift gate (with up down buttons) to a 2016 (with key)?
Sadly, I dented the rear hatch on my 2016 Trail Premium with a manual lift gate - with the key hole next to the "R" on the rear hatch 4Runner bezel. I found a salvage yard with a complete rear lift gate from a 2022 Limited in the same color (mag gray) but with the up and down arrows where the key hole is on mine.
Does anyone know if this can plug and play with my 2016? I'm planning on doing the swap myself. Any recommendations would be hugely appreciated from you all here.

Not even joking here. I had no idea the 22’s had auto lift gates. I was under the impression that this feature is nowhere to be found on a stock 4r. Definitely interested in learning more about this!

I don't think the arrows you're referencing are for the lift gate per se. They should control the rear window up or down, in the older models you had to turn and hold the key in the direction you wanted to open the window (left for close, right for open, might be getting my directions mixed up here). I can't offer any tips on replacing the lift gate but just wanted to clear up any confusion about those buttons. I'm sure that 4Runners don't come with automatic lift gates from factory but there are some aftermarket options out there.

Ah, yes, correct, the arrows are just for window up and down vs. the key left or right turn. I just discovered that indeed, all 5th Gen 4Runner lift gates are manual. I just need the up/down arrow buttons from the 2022 to work on my 2016. I have no idea what the wiring or harness differences might be or if there's risk in the wiring being different to the point where I shouldn't attempt to do this but I'd really like to.

You need to have the smart key in order for those to work. Doubtful that’s an easy retrofit.

Even the 16 limited had the arrows for the window but it is a smart key function so you would need the entire smart key system. Old Red did one but he said it's pretty complex and would let people know if he figures out an easier way.

My guess is the actual lift gate is IDENTICAL. I bet only the plastic trim and wiring harness is different. Buy the lift gate, swap the plastic bits, wiring and lock cylinder and you'll most likely be good to go.
Toyota doesn't change shit that it doesn't need to change. Especially in the hard metal fab department. Why make 2 different lift gates for something easily retrofitted by plastic and wiring?
Have the dealer run the part numbers for just the metal lift gate.

I've wanted to do this retrofit as well, but my truck doesn't have the smart key so I always assumed it wouldn't work

It won’t. At best you’ll end up with buttons that are powered on all the time when the vehicle is sitting. No key, no nothing. Push button get in car.
Reality though is that it probably won’t do anything but sit there and mock you. Without the smart key infrastructure (antenna, harness, computer to recognize the key it’s been programmed to accept etc.) you’re not getting anywhere.

Yep that's what I've always figured would be the case. I miss the remote button that both my 4G's had, it was so nice to just push a button as you're approaching the vehicle with stuff in hand and just have the window drop so stuff can be loaded in

I miss that too but not as much as I miss the electric closing tailgate. I hate having to slam the 5g tailgate shut to latch it.

Yeah, but that's ALL windows, not the rear one
