13' T4R Limited mechanic Columbus Ohio?

My warranty is long expired on my 2013 Limited. I have over 250K and the truck runs great. However, I've decided to stop messing with the dealership for service.

1. When turning extremely left, weird rubbing noise (nothing visible)

2. Brakes have a rubbing noise and sometimes happen when the brakes are not applied.

I need break service plus the turning issue addressed. Has anyone had any experience with a nondealer service center in Columbus Ohio? Plus, anyone to avoid?

Hi dclark2171,

I have a 2012 4Runner Limited. My 1'st question is, are you running over-size tires... i.e., 275/55R 20s; which is what I'm running; No Lift(?)! I have N/P with rubbing though! The next thing that I had trouble with is, Rusty Front brake-pad sliding pins/Rod Hardware! One day I was running on I-95; I was doing about 85 mph, which felt fine with the Good-Year Eagle LS-II's I'm using!

This Runner still has only 27,800 Miles on it "TODAY"; but RUST... is a Huge Problem with the 5'th 4Runner; especially, like in the salt-belt near where you live! So coming off of I-95, when I hit the brake (at 85mph), the steering wheel starting shaking HARD! And right then I knew my rotors were warped! But I NEVER Noticed it before that day!

So I took it to my local Good-Year tire/front-end shop, where an ole buddy still works; I used to be an auto mechanic back in the '80s and we used to work together! So he pulled the wheels off, came and got me, and showed me that the rotors had turned BLUE from the heat (so they warped, badly).

They were too thin to lathe, so I was out for New pads, New Hardware, and two New Rotors... $600.00 bucks with labor! I'm telling you this bc yours may be making noise; which mine didn't do... at all! You could even check them yourself, if you have the time. Pull the Front tires off and look at the rotors; if they're Blue in color, and if the brake-pads are really worn!

~rig~ Best to you dclark2171!

Are you trying to take break service from a local vendor? For me, I always try to take service the original vendor with original parts.

Sounds like you need new calipers because the brakes were dragging:

Hi CutthroatSlam,

Well I don't know if you've ever looked at your front brake design, but the pads glide "back and forth" on two hardware rods. But the guiding rods got rusty, so the pads became FIXED, against the front rotors; and unable to retract away from the turning disc's!

So the caliper pistons were retracting as they should, but the rotors were still damaged, do to the excessive heat from the friction of the brake pads being frozen against the discs! This happened back in 2018...!

Now I lubricate the hardware regularly! The rotors turned blue from the excessive heat! It turns out, 5'th Gen 4RUNNERs are subject to chassis/frame rust, depending on where you live!

~rig~ Best to you, Cheers!

We have 322K miles on a 2014 SR5 and I have done all the brake maintenance. They apply ice melt chemicals to the main highways in Montana; sand or decomposed granite to the rest.
