I tried that but it just takes me to a search. Maybe because my account is new. I will try again later. Thank you!

Hello, you seem very knowledgeable and I am sorry that person didn't reply. Sorry to be responding to an old thread but I just joined and haven't figured out how to start a new thread. This is kind of urgent.

I have a 2004 Toyota 4Runner. I don't really drive it and long story why I am keeping it. Well, the garage I take it to for inspection failed it for a couple reasons, but this one is because the OEM fog lights. My brother in law said there's a short somewhere. I think he said "power through both wires", if that makes sense. He said he tested the relay and the fuse, both good. Oh, and no light on the dash. Same story this person on the thread stated.

I am not sure which fuse(s) or relay(s) he looked at. He was a mechanic so I am guessing he checked everything, but I have to ask him. I hate bothering people. But can you please tell me what I can check?

Please be easy on me. I am a woman that tries to do everything on my own. Soooo, that said, about a year ago, I replaced the Rear Hatch Latch Actuator. That is in the trunk. I bought a part from Amazon. Not to sound stupid, but is it possible, that I knocked anything off in there that caused the short in the fog lights?

And I know this is not the right topic for this, but it also failed for gas tank straps. My brother-in-law will replace, however, the "cover" is also rotted. The quote the garage gave did not have the cover in it, so not sure if it is needed for inspection, but it is rotted and I am not sure what the correct part number is to replace it. I will start a new thread (if I can figure out how) on this. I am sorry for the long post. I have to pass inspection (Pennsylvania) by the end of the month. I already paid for the emission exemption sticker.

Thank you in advance for any guidance you can provide.
hi . welcome to the forum. for fuses what you will need is a multi metre or a fuse test light. I prefer the test light when checking for a broken fuse. go in your owners manual or look it up online and look for the fuse box diagrams. 5th gens have two, one in engine bay and one under steering wheel. 4th gens probably the same. you can probe each side of the fuse with the test light and check for continuity . this is really easy to do, there are multiple youtube videos. this will help spot a burnt fuse. turn the lights and highbeams on when applicable when testing light fuses, those fuses will likely be in engine bay. now if you've checked the fuses, checked the bulbs/lights and the fogs still aren't turning on then this problem gets a lot more difficult to solve. you could have a wiring issue or the switch on the stalk just could not be working. you will need someone who understands wiring diagrams and how to troubleshoot this . it would be a difficult DIY for most people

for the gas tank. your skid plate is rotted. probably not needed for inspection unless it was so rotted it posed a danger. you can call a toyota dealer and ask for the part number and order a replacement. they're steel, they will rust no biggie

Thank you so much for your reply. My brother-in-law confirmed that he checked all this. I also contacted the garage and they said the cover is not needed for inspection. I ordered a toggle switch for the bypass to get the fog lights working and the fuel tank straps.

Appreciate all your help!

I'll start with a couple of questions: (1) Do your fog-lights work? ...you mentioned the fog-light Indicator, but no mention the fog-lights themselves(?)!

(2) "The fog-light Indicator will not work if the High-Beams are on" ...have you checked that? I'm Not trying to be a smart-arse, but before we can begin to trouble-shoot this problem (and since I'm Not there), I need to ask you a few more questions!

(3) There are 3 Head-light fuses are under the hood [ENG RM]: (2) 10A & (1) 20A But I don't suspect any of those b/c ya didn't blow 3 fuses at one time! I'm considering the ACC fuse 7.5A, and ECU-IG2 10A. [ENG RM] Those will affect the HIGH & LOW-Beam Head-light relays, and the fogs if they're not working!

(4) Then there are the H-LP LOW & H-LP HIGH Relays [Near the Electrical power entrance] (see 2ga White wire coming into the main fuse-box!) I'll look for your input b-4 I can go any further with diagnostic analysis on this...

~rig~ Best!
Hi sir. I too am having issues with my fog lights. I too installed a remote start in my 2019 TRD OR PREM in Dec 2022 and just noticed fog lights not working. I believe they were after the install, but not now. I read your response to the previous member and tested all the fuses and they are all good too. My lights are on; not on high though and I am getting the indicator light on my dash that fog lights are on. Do you have any other suggestions for me? TIA!

No wonder this forum is not flooded with the same threads everyday.
That's a great feature.

So I am having this problem, no fog lights or fog light indicator on the dash, checked all the fuses, they were fine. I looked at the relays and switched them with like relays and still nothing.

Any idea? Thanks!

Get the wiring diagram for your vehicle (it is on TIS) and then you can check the voltage at each point in the circuit. Could be a simple as the switch in the steering stalk.

I finally found a thread on Reddit that solved my problem. The fuse to the tail lights are connected somehow to the fog lights. I replaced the fuse to the tail lights and now my fog lights work. Worth a try!
