Lifespan of 5100s and resale value?
Hey guys, I'm about to upgrade my suspension to Dobinson's and thinking of going with their shocks as well.
Having said that, my 5100's are 3 years old and have 23k miles (mostly street and some FS roads) on them. What kind of lifespan have you guys gotten from yours and is there much resale value to them at that age and mileage?
Thanks

how does the 5100s ride? I placed an order for rear 5160s but thinking they wont be fulfilled. I have 6112s up front and the 5100s are probably the better option for on road use.

Right? Obviously will be dependent on driving style and off-road use but I don't think I'll have any qualms about flipping them to someone else now.

We’re greater than 95% highway use as my wife uses the 4Runner to go back and forth between ranch in Stevensville, Montana and home in Fullerton, California. That said, the OEM shocks were done by 80K miles. She does off-road, but nothing hairy or technical. I do just about all the maintenance and have been nothing but impressed with the reliability of this vehicle. So much so, we have a 2023 on order just to ensure we get the 4.0L V6 and avoid the rumored twin turbo 3.4L V6 in the 6th Gen. The 2014 should easily see 500K miles.

Tough part about this is that they’re not serviceable. When they blow out, they’re done. Obviously some folks are getting a ton of life out of them, but you also see a lot of people on here asking about replacements at the usual 40-60k. All depends on use. Only takes one bad shot or afternoon. Because they’re not serviceable, you may not find people willing to pay all that much. Likely cost more to ship. Id try to sell them locally, and I wouldnt expect much. Just my .02.

Thank you. The guy I’d sell them to is local and I’d really be looking at just taking the bite off my new purchase so $300ish or so for the front, rears, and a spacer.

They ride great. Better and longer than OEM shocks.

Sounds like a fair price to me with the spacer. I was going to say $250 for the shocks. Personally, not being serviceable on a suspension in this price range that is more "OEM" isn't that big of an issue for me if I were buying. They are an excellent performer for under $500 new, but 5100s are still in the "just another wear item" class of shocks IMO.

Mine are about 5 years old and 90k miles. 95% highway, but my off-road miles are typically long stretches of washboards. No leaks.

Thanks, man, you may have convinced me just to keep them and save a couple of hundred extra bucks that I could put elsewhere.

5160 order was cancelled by store so still looking into new rear shocks. I have the Trd pro suspension with 6112s up front. Considering the 5100s in the rear or DOBINSONS IMS59-50701 IMS. If dobinsons, Ill replace the 6112s once they start leaking . Best price I've found on the 5100s is $189 or dobinsons at $520

On the flip side this doesn’t matter unless you have a 4WD shop that actually rebuilds shocks. Everyone now is replace, replace, replace. Can’t find anyone that turns rotors, either.

Yea, that's the tough part. You can send them back to Fox or whoever, but thats a lot of work and downtime on your vehicle unless you have something to swap in for the time being.
