Oil change interval
I got my first free Syn oil change on my Toyotacare plan today. Its a 2022 with 9461 miles and its 9 months old. At least 6-7K are long hwy miles, 800 mi round trips. I wasnt worried about the 10K service interval cuz in Europe they only change oil once a year and people who send used oil to Blackstone labs get reports that oil is still good over 10K usage. Well my oil smells of gasoline. I noticed the smell when I pulled the dipstick Sunday prompting me to schedule the oil change today. I requested the filter to look for metal shavings which there werent any, but the filter smelled strongly of gas also. Im worried that either Toyota Oil isnt good enough for 10K service intervals or that the engine seals arent working? Mr Google stated that gas smell in oil is common for long OCI's. And my dealer said that they get their oil from a Toyota supplier. My 2016 gets by fine with 1 yr Syn oil changes with no gas smell but I only drive 4-5K a year on it and I use Pennzoil Platinum. Ive read online that Toyota Syn oil is Mobil 1 made to Toyota specs. Any thoughts?

5K is the general recommended interval. Toyota only wants to pay for 2 free to you changes. Some run 10K without issues.

Piston rings wear into a nice seal during engine break in. I would expect more leakage on the first oil change.
Run another ~10k miles and see what you find. You’ll still be well within warranty period, so plenty of time to address with Toyota if needed. Collect a sample of second change too in case you want to have it analyzed.

Injectors can leak and drip when the engine is off.
That will usually tend to make it start a little harder if enough leaks down.
I would be more worried about that happening, something to check.
And my Toyota dealer doesn't even use Toyota oil.

The general maintenance intervals are 5k, but oil changes are 10k.

Send your oil sample to Blackstone and then adjust accordingly.
Toyota 0w/20 is made by Mobil 1 and is considered one of the best 0w/20 oils available. Most dealers do not use Toyota 0w/20 though.

This is my first and only post in the 5th gen section, but I have to agree with Matt. I'd collect a sample at your next change, or have the tech do it if you're having Toyota do the change and send it off to Blackstone for analysis. It would be good to get a reading on how things are doing this early on just to see where you stand.
I imagine that everything previously mentioned is consistent with typical break in period stuff. I wouldn't worry too much but if it continues every time you get an oil change, then maybe I'd start to raise my eyebrows.

Manual says 10K for oil. I have 322K miles on a 2014 that proves that.

I do every 5K miles. I started out with the 10k, but had it done at 8k and again around 15k but had a horrible experience with the stealership service department dumping oil all over my engine bay and all over my brand new $300 Odyssey battery so I told them I would not be back and started doing it myself every 5k. I didn't have concerns about 10k but I'm way too OCD to only do it every 10k miles

I did mine at 8K. Went to dealership for a 5K maintenance. I asked if they can change the oil but doesn't recommend because I was only closing it to 5K and suggest to do it closer to 10K or closer to 1 year mark. But I should have done it at 5K or sooner since I just learned that it's good to change the factory/first oil as soon as you can. But then I don't drive my 4runner every day.
I think my next oil change is isn't due until 12K or 6months. But I might do it sooner at 10-11K or at 6month mark. After that, I'll do a 5k interval.

Most others agree 5K but like I said some people don't have issues going to 10Kbut I and others prefer 5K changes.

Why every 5k miles? You using conventional or towing a lot?

I don't do extended oil changes. Oil is cheap enough and I almost hit the 6 month mark between 5K in mostly city driving so I change it out.
