Transmission fluid "temperature mode" OBD2

Hello All,
I am in the process of doing drain and fill transmission fluid on my 16 runner. I saw video of older 5th gen video of https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NUAu...=TheCarCareNut shown here.
Since my dash is different looking my truck is not showing the same thing.

This is what I did.
1. Connect the pins using a wire on my OBD2
2. Started the truck
3. Used the stick back and forth on D to N and eventually I see letter D shown regardless of moving back and forth.
4. I put it in D
5. I wait for 20 mins or so and there is flashing D or no new Temperature symbol appearing on my instrument panel.

Am I missing something? Is there a video how to do this on newer 5th gens like 2016?

This procedure never worked on our 2014 SR5. In the end 20 minutes of idling got it close enough (in my mind) to call it good. I did the full drop the pan, change filter, then detach line per instructions and pump out 2 to 3 quarts, lather rinse repeat with like 12 quarts until fluid is clear. Check fluid level and top up if necessary. Measuring what you pump out will get you very close.

Hi Mgltacoma,

I like AMD-"The-Car-Care-Nut" Videos! I think it was AMD, who said, that 4Runners are famous for sticky sticky or worn Neutral Safety Switches! So when that happens, as you've described, check your Neutral safety switch for trouble... spray it with penetrating oil, and work it, or check it with an OHM Meter for continuity!

Sorry, it is not that issue where 4lo flashing etc. This is just me simply trying to enter special factory setting that allows you to measure operating Transmission temperature without any special tool. Entering that mode is pretty tricky apparently.

If you don't have Techstream, you can also just use an IR thermometer and check the pan temp. You can get them at any hardware store for cheap these days.

we tried the jumper wire method as well on a 2017 and never got it to work. @Mgltacoma

If the temperature of the WS in the transmission is the same as the replacement fluid, then you can replace with the same volume. If the fluid in the transmission is warmer than the replacement fluid, then you can replace by using fluid mass. Get a kitchen scale and weigh the volume of fluid that came out, and replace it with the same weight of replacement WS, even if the temperature is different. In fluid dynamics, volume is proportional temperature. As fluid temperature increases, so does it's volume. But fluid mass is independent of temperature. One pound of WS at 70 degrees will still be one pound of WS at 100 degrees.

This. Assuming your initial fluid level was set right, simply drain it cold and put back in what you took out. I used one of those graduated plastic 1 gallon pitchers. I did the shifter/temp light trick on my Tacoma with no problem after some rough shifting and the dealer quoted me 7k for a new trans. After reading online that some Tacoma’s had an issue with being under filled from the dealer, I did the temp/fill tube method and discovered I was 1.75 qts low. Got my levels correct and the shifting is smooth as butter now. I didn’t like the idea of trying to disconnect the lines and dump from there, so I just basically did 12 quarts in 3 quart installments with a day of driving in between. If you have multiple Toyotas or plan on doing it somewhat frequently, buying that little pressurized canister that looks like a Hudson sprayer is awesome and makes the job a snap.

Saving so much $$$ with DIY service justifies a little splurging on tools every now and then.

Harbor Freight IR temp gun was 15 bucks...

Much rather do that than shorting out pins on my OBD to possibly fry something.
