New to Me 2010 SR5

I just picked up a black 2010 4Runner SR5 4wd with slightly more that 120,000 miles. We have had four 4th Gen 4Runners and the kids still have two of them

The 2010 was stolen a few months ago. Thieves put 3,000 miles on it in a month. It was found abandoned in the desert after a month or so. It had some damage to the rear bumper and rear liftgate. The interior was pretty dirty. The exterior had marks down each side from driving through sage brush. The undercarriage was caked in desert mud and sand.

After several hours of power washing and vacuuming, it was looking pretty good. I spent another 4 or 5 hours with a Flex 3401 polisher and Rupes pads, compounds and polishes and the black exterior looked better than it did when it came out of the showroom. I spent another 4 hours scrubbing and shampooing the interior seats and carpets, including complete removal and reinstallation of the rear sliding tray. Evidently the thieves were syphoning gas along there desert rides and some of the gas spilled in the cargo area and saturated the carpet on the sliding tray. Several applications of a Simple
Green and water mix 1/10,scrubbing and power washing and it looked good as new.

I have a few issues that I am trying to resolve.

1. radio and climate controls work great, but there when the headlights are on no lights come on the radio or the climate controls. The speedo, tach and other dash lights work fine.

2. The center dome light and button on the ceiling controls/sunroof switches is missing. Toyota tells me that the dome light cover and button are only sold on the complete unit, $1,200 plus.

3. smoke/pot smell (evidently the thieves were heavy into smoking cigarettes and pot). Even after the interior cleaning there is still smoke odor. There are also two cigarette burn holes, one in the driver's seat and one on the rear seat, I have fixed holes like these using a Permatex product, it worked really well. Hopefully it will work on these two holes.

A few parts are missing including the jack/tool panel cover (black), the roof rack cross bars. I was able to find a pair of cross bars, but have no idea how to install them onto the rails.

The antenna had been broken off and the bottom rubber grommet was missing. I was able to use a tiny flathead screwdriver and back the broken bottom end of the antenna out of the antenna base. I ordered a new antenna and bottom grommet on Amazon, $30 for the antenna mast and $9 for the grommet.

Since I need to replace the rear bumper and the front bumper has a few dings, I decided to do a update to the front and rear bumpers. I found some incredible youtube videos on the make over. Seems like the purchase of the bumper covers are only a small fraction of the cost of the facelift. I put a list together, sadly there are no 5th Gen 4Runners at any wrecking yards in the San Diego area.

I found a front SR5 Premium bumper cover, upper grille and top arch $150. I also found a SR5 Premium rear bumper, no chrome trim and no sensor holes $100 (I do plan on drilling holes and installing the parking sensors). I also found a front rebar from a 2017 SR5, with mounting brackets $50.

I still need the:

1.upper bumper support (center bar);
2. the two side brackets;
3. the brackets that mount to the front edges of both front fenders;
4. the lower grille;
5. lower air deflector;
6. I also need the tow hitch arch for the back bumper;
7. the two mounting brackets that attach to the bottom of each tail light;
8. Jack/Tool Panel cover; and
9. Overhead Console middle dome light lens and button.

I also found a set of like-new OEM head lights $100. I just need to order a pair of H11 male plugs to swap to the turn signal wires $9 on Amazon. I understand that the 2010 fog lights can be used on the newer style bumpers.

Got to pick up some misc. mud flaps and filler pieces for the rear bumper wings where they attach to the right and left rear quarter panels.

I was surprised that even though it has the base radio, it has a pretty good bluetooth phone quality and it actually streams music! Our Range Rover of the same year has cell phone bluetooth but no streaming! A new updated sound system with a back up camera is on the wish list.

It has the original 2010 wheels and some like-new BF Goodrich All Terrains. The 2010 wheels have some clearcoat peeling. I have a brand new set of take-off wheels from a 2021 4Runner. I plan on swapping them for the original wheels.

Should be a great truck when it is finished. Any suggestions, ideas or anyone with the needed parts please chime in.

Photos to follow.

Thanks LJ4R

that sucks that your vehicle was stolen, I actually think it sucks more now that it was found. do you have car insurance? usually stolen vehicles are paid out by insurance after around 30 days.

thieves cut and disable certain systems to make vehicles harder to track. many times recovered vehicles have multiple electrical problems that are nasty and expensive to track down and fix

I assume your car insurance is covering all these repairs? drugs were consumed in the vehicle (yes pot is a drug) and it still smells of pot, I'd argue that's a problem that needs to be remedied. all these repairs I'm surprised they have not totaled it. bumper covers are easily $2K new and a lot more than that is needed

I actually bought it after it was stolen. Insurance did total it because it wasn't for more than 30 days, the typical time period at which they deem a stolen vehicle totaled. I am trying to source parts for the update without using the dealer. Sadly there aren't any 5th Gen 4Runners in my area. Any ideas on the radio and climate control light?

I hope you stole it from the insurance company. Have you tried to turn up the dimmer for the interior lights?

Yes, no difference with the dimmer. The radio and climate control work fine, just no lights at night. I thought it might be a fuse, but I doubt that there is a fuse specifically for the lights and another for power to the radio and climate control.

Hi LJ4R,

Sorry for your misfortune! I may need to put my hands on the Interior Courtesy Light Wiring schematics/Diagrams to help you; but... maybe NOT!! I think you're trouble is with the Dimmer-dial! Not the Dimmer Switch, or Head-light stalk... I mean the small dial next to the Mirror control Switch! If it's dialed UP, it's ON for the HVAC TEMP SYSTEM/Sound System lights!

If it's dialed DOWN, twds the floor, it'll be OFF when the Head-lights are on; killing the Interior HVAC System & Audio System Control lighting! Test that out, and if you find that it's dialed UP, for those interior lights to function, hit this post back and I'll look for the wiring diagrams; I have Hundreds of pgs of diagrams for Toyota, but they're NOT in any particular order... numeric or Alphabetic!

~rig~ Cheers!

LJ4R,

Have you tried the Lighting Panel fuse? It could be Blown! It's located in the D/S fuse-box labeled: 7.5A Panel; See Below:

Yes...,

There Are two(2) separate fuses for the Head-unit: Engine-room (non-JBL), a fuse for the Center Panel lighting, and More fuses for "Htg & A/C Units!" See my above reply to your OP!

We have a winner! Fuse was blown. I had to pry it out. It had "welded" itself to the fuse box. I replaced the fuse and tried the lights......boom, it immediately blew. I need to do a deep inspection of the fuse box. it that checks out, I need to find a schematic and track down the cause. Thank you for all of the comments. Phil

Hey Phil,

I know you have a lot to deal with right now...! If this were my truck I think I would (1'st), pick up a 7.5A plug-in Circuit breaker, cuz to test this kind of trouble you're trying to isolate the short circuit by process of elimination; which means, unplugging suspected components, "One at a time" until the breaker "...DOESN'T TRIP!"

That'll be the culprit circuit of interest! You stated; in your last post that after replacing the blown 7.5A fuse, then turning the head-lights on, the fuse blew right away! If that's the case, I think I'd pull the Head-light relay [Engine-room] out and see if the breaker still trips or not!

If NOT, I'd check EVERYTHING on that circuit; wiring harnesses, the relay... (exchange it with an identical one plugged in near-by it)! And do the same with the other related circuits e.g., the Dimmer-dial itself; it could be shorted as well. Please keep us posted; this is one's for the books!

~rig~ Best to you and yours!

I didn't even know that they made auto fuse circuit breakers. Great suggestion. I will order one and start the diagnostics. Thank you for all of the helpful ideas! Phil

N/P Phil,

When installing (and buying) the same fuse, over and, over... and still haven't found the trouble, ya start ta work Smarter... NOT Harder, lol; especially when you haven't got the schematic diagrams at your disposal yet! I can tell... you'll find the problem... QUICKLY!

"PLEASE let us know what-cha find!"

A local Toyota dealer sells the front bumper cover for $232 and the rear is close to that. Off brands are a low as $120 and painted for under $200
You would be surprised at some of the dealer prices. Oil filters were less than $3 bucks last time I bought them a year or so ago.
