Barcelona Red - Opinions?
When we were looking at used 4th Gens and 1st Gen Sequoias a while back, we ran across a few red ones. Red never did a lot for me, so never really looked at them. My wife had a 2000 Ford Ranger that was a basic red, which she bought new. I did like the color, but probably wouldn't have picked it for myself. We never ended up buying a 4th Gen 4R or Sequoia as they were hard to find with mileage that was low enough for my wife.
We have decided to buy a 2022 4Runner and forget about the crazy hunt for a good used one. A dealer in my area said he could possibly get me a TRD ORP with KDSS (a must) but possibly have them add the rear cargo deck before delivery, which I was no one else has. But, it's Barcelona Red - we saw a used Barcelona Red SR5 inside the showroom of my local dealer and it actually looked decent (wife loved it, of course), and actually pretty cool with blacked out badging and wheels. I don't want to pass on the new ORP the other dealer is trying to get us on just on color (I did tell him no black, silver, or white), and it definitely makes finding your car easier in a parking lot!
For those of you with a Barcelona Red 4R, how do you like it? Does it do the color shift change depending on the light like some of the other colors like Army Green and Lunar Rock? How does it handle visibility of scratches (why I told the dealer black was a hard NO)? Durability any better or worse than the bad things I hear about white? Any affect on Resale/Trade-In value?

I don’t have that color but I do like it. It was my second color choice. I went with silver.

I have a 2019 ORP in Barcelona Red, I don't know why "Barcelona", but I really like it. It has the blacked-out badging and black TRD wheels. In 2019 when I ws looking to buy a 4Runner I really wanted a Pro in Voodoo Blue. None were available so I got the ORP in red.
It's a metallic red, as you know, and with the blacked-out badging and wheels and really looks sharp. I'm an old guy and like chrome but the blacked-out badging has grown on me. The more I think about it I might have gotten tired of the VooDoo Blue but who knows. Here it is just brought home from the dealer.

Really Nice Red
Hey
We bought our Barcelona Red ‘19 ORP with blacked out trim and a wrap. Door hand covers added.
It looks REALLY AMAZING in the sun and we get compliments all the time!
Don’t hesitate!

In that light, it looks great! I'm an ole (er) guy too and thought the black badging looks good on some lighter colors, but not on MGM or Black...needs contrast. It does look sharp on that Red.

I have a 2014 Barcelona Red with 180,000 kms (Canadian Eh?). It's been trailed quite a bit, hardly ever waxed, looks like the previous owner was someone who liked using the wheel brush on the entire car at carwashes, etc, etc, etc, so my paint is in rough shape. Ever after all of that, it still looks relatively good in most lights and with a single stage polish and a good wax or ceramic coat it would be quite passable.
I enjoy the shade of red, looks amazing clean and waxed and a much deeper red when maintained. I'd consider mine a worst case scenario for day to day use and its still nice to look at.

I was all set to get Barcelona Red, but coming back from a test drive, I saw the 4Runner sitting on the lot I ended up buying. It color shifts depending on light. I like it in any lighting situation. It's a Nautical Blue TRD ORP.
I say buy what you like. You and your wife are the only people you have to please.

Something interesting about an Off-Road in Barcelona Red is it appears to be Toyota's favorite color and trim. If you look at Toyota's marketing and brochures, they show the 4Runner as a Barcelona Red Off-Road more than anything else.
When they launched the refresh in 2014, the launch color was Barcelona Red and all the press photos were a Barcelona Red Trail. Every 4Runner brochure from 2014-2022 has featured a Barcelona Red Trail/Off-Road on the cover.
I would imagine all automakers spend considerable time and money on what trim and color they use for advertising and Toyota seems to love Barcelona Red.

I traded my 2011 Shoreline Blue Trail for a 2020 B Red ORP and like the color. My 1999 SR5 5sp manual Desert Dune metallic is still the best color Toyota has had. Looks good when it'd dirty. The 23 yo paint job is holding up better than newer 4Runners with the thin coating of environmentally friendly paint. I think that's part of the decontentiing efforts made to keep costs down (profits up).
I had a red 93 4runner that lost red paint on the wax pad after several years. I think they had a clear coat red the same color that year. As I recall some of the clear coats peeled. The jump from the 2nd gen to the 3rd gen was major in terms of drive components, e.g. rack/pinion steering, much improved 3.4L over the 3.0L, paint jobs.

My previous 4Runner was a 2008 in whatever red that was - and, like you, never a red kind of guy. But I quickly grew to love it. It shines up nice and I got more compliments than any of my now five 4Runners. I went with a silver 2021 because we live in VT so lots of days (weeks and months) of salt - which it hides really well! I'd encourage you to go for it!
We also were looking for a good, low mileage used 4Runner only to find things like older ones with reasonable mileage or newer ones with crazy mileage (like a 2018 with 70K for $33K. Bought a new Premium for less than 10K more. You are going to love your new one!

Speaking as the former lead detailer for a Toyota dealership, I've detailed just about every color Toyota ever made. Barcelona Red is definitely one of Toyota's sexier colors in my opinion. Detailed and maintained correctly, it's a drop-dead gorgeous color and much easier to maintain than any of the darker colors which show every imperfection.
Want something easy to maintain? White, and silver are the easiest. Want something super sexy? Black, but the effect lasts about 30 seconds until dust settles on it. Barcelona Red is a good happy medium.

I have a 2019 Barcelona Red ORP. I've always had white or silver vehicles but this one got me when I saw it on the lot in person. With the blacked out emblems and wheels they look very sharp. They do look different shades of red in different light which is really cool too. I don't think you'd be disappointed if you bought a Barcelona Red 4R.
