New Tire Thread: Anyone running Mickey Thompson Baja Boss AT or Hankook Dynapro XT?
So after about 30K miles my Yokohama Geolander X-ATs are getting pretty worn out. Wear has been kind of uneven with the centers of the tires surprisingly wearing heaviest (down to around 5/32 to 6/32 on them both front and back). They're pretty chunked out in spots also courtesy of Arizona and Colorado offroading. They've been tough as nails with no failures, but have definitely been a bit of a bear for heavy highway mileage (we tend to do a lot of long duration road trips). Gas mileage definitely suffered significantly versus the stock Terra Grappler. I figure I'll have to pull the trigger on new tires in the next few months (definitely by November ahead of the coming winter) and can probably start to watch for the inevitable timing of a good Discount Tire sale/rebate combination.
I'm always watching out for interesting new releases in the world of offroad tires and I'm very curious about the new Mickey Thompson Baja Boss AT (would actually consider the XL load I think for the potential fuel economy savings and better on-road behavior anticipated) and the Hankook Dynapro XT (which seems to be a bit lighter weight than a lot of E loads out there). Anybody have any significant experience with these on a 4Runner yet?
Severe snow rated is a must for my next tire due to a renewed emphasis on skiing in my life style (and not a strong point of the Yokohoma). I ran a Falken Wildpeak AT3W in E-load on my previous 4Runner and liked a lot about it (plus back then they were a freaking steal cost wise) but had a lot of balance issues with them. Other tires I have experience with from my Jeep days are Nitto Exo Grapplers, Nitto Trail Grapplers, and BF Goodrich KMs. At this point I've come to the conclusion a good AT or severe-snow capable hybrid tire (which the Dynapro XT is pretty unique with) are probably the sweet spot for me.

We just ordered a set of the Mickey Thompsons in 35s for my friends wrangler. Those (in 285s or 295s) will be our next set of tires. I've only heard good things about them, but supposedly a hair louder than the Wildpeak AT3W (we have those and love them) and not quite as good good wet grip as the AT3Ws. The hankooks, I think Lifestyle Overland on youtube had those on his rig and they did not hold up well. I think after a couple of trips they had to get new tires (Mickey Thompson Baja Boss MTZ I think?) because the hankooks just kept getting cuts and flats.

Yeah, the Motortrend write up on the Hankook's kind of has me worried about the long term durability of them also if really used offroad.
Hankook Dynapro XT Hybrid Off-Road Tire Review
The sidewalls look surprisingly weak for an E-rated RT/XT tire, but I know they are only 48 pounds at LT265/70 which suggests to me that they are not particularly burly.
Probably leaning towards the Mickey Thompson now... Need to come to terms with XL vs. E-rated on them though.

Get the Mickey Thompson's. They are excellent from what I hear in the Jeep world and a few people that have them here. My brother has them on his F150 and loves them. I almost went with them myself, but decided to try Maxxis ATs really just based on price and weight for a 285/70.
FWIW, those Hankooks are horrifically boring looking tires. And that's important

If the centers are wearing excessively, that's a good indication that they've been overinflated.
I can say that the Yokohama G015's do great in the wet and well in snow. We've had record snowfall this year, and I have been pleased with their performance.
They are friendlier on-road than the X/AT's.
They aren't the most aggressive-looking tires, but I'm more about function over form.
I'm running the LT 265/70R17 E size.

Definitely leaning this way; need to think about E vs. XL at this point. E durability for southwest offroading is definitely a good thing, but still wondering if the trade offs are worth it.

I really wondered about if I over-inflated them, but I typically kept them in the 32 to 35 psi range cold which seemed to me like if anything it would be underinflated for an E load tire on a 4Runner.
Don't get me wrong about the X-AT on-road; it hasn't been bad. Just has gotten a bit noisy with time, not very good for MPG and definitely is not particularly strong for snow.
I've heard good stuff about the G015, but always found them to be too vanilla looking .

New Discount Tire Rebate
$100 rebate on a set of Baja Boss A/T for what it's worth. Brand new promo that just kicked in today (April 1); good through May 15 at this point it looks like.
Discount Tire | Tires and Wheels for Sale | Online & In-Person
I feel like I should try to get at least another 5K miles out of my X-AT though .
