Audio Upgrade?

Hello all:

I have a 22' SR5 Premium and I hate the speakers.

I have found two "plug and play" kits and I was wondering if anyone had experience with either one or if there are any other options out there?

I am looking at just speakers for now and possibly adding an amp and bass later one.

I found the OEM Audio Plus set for $649 and the Trail Grid Pro Kicker set up for $588. The kicker seems to have a few more adapters and wiring to do than the OEM system.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Pat

I have the OEM Audio Plus speakers and they sound great -- crisper highs and a bit more bass. I avoid anything that requires adapters or cutting/spicing/tapping the wires.

My installer set me up with Focal for my doors. Direct fitment. Huge improvement over the quarter sized OEM magnets of course. Aftermarket deck went in a couple weeks later as it was on order but hearing those with the factory stereo was a tremendous improvement. I had already replaced the tweeters myself. Anyway, Focal is a quality replacement for sure and not overly expensive I think in comparison with others.

I upgraded both of my 4Runners with Kickers all around incl. 3/4" silk dome tweeters.
`Yota stock Rear and Hatch speakers are pathetic tbh.
I used 3-way 6x9's for the front door (sound stage) 150RMS, and 6-1/2" 2-way for the rear door 100RMS as well as 5-1/4" 2-way speakers for the hatch 75RMS.
If you order through Crutchfield they usually throw in the spk adapters and metra harnesses at no charge.
BTW: BOSS makes a decent 800w discrete all-in-one Sub that easily fits under the passenger seat - to bring the boom!

Good luck!

Thank you all for the responses.

I tried Crutchfield but they didn't list anything except for the front doors. I will need to give them a call. I have put in a few systems from them and they are incredible as far as customer and tech service goes.

My 5th Gen Speaker upgrade/setup.

I know it can sometimes be a bit confusing. The automated system at Crutchfield isn't anything more than their vehicle specific recommendations. I did the research before pulling the trigger and my 5th Gen 4Runner now has a great low budget sound system without modifying the stock vehicle wiring.

Lower Front Door/Rear Door: (I installed in Rear Doors) Crutchfield says it won't fit Rear but I used the Kicker OEM spk adapter just fine)

TacoTunes also has a system that integrates in with the factory head unit.
Just about anything is an upgrade over the factory stuff.

I'm running JL Audio: Fr to R - 3.5, 6x9, 6.5, 6.5, 2x 8" (w3's, have a single 10 in the works). It'd be much better with an aftermarket head unit for sure, but a complete system overhaul will happen eventually.

I upgraded both of my 4runners back-to-back to incl. soundproofing and other retrofit mods. It was a challenging but rewarding project for a DIY.

I actually have a theory that my dual JL w6v2's could be used for extra propulsion with the massive amount of air they move. hehe

I bought all my speakers from Crutchfield and did the installs myself, if they don't provide the speaker mounting adapters I got mine from TacoTunes and just mounted them and installed them myself. These wire adapters are all you really need

best piece of advice you will receive regarding install of door panels!!!

reinstalling the door panel try not to remove the window sill part! I struggled with it for about 20 minutes and stepped away. After a few searches I found out that was my issue. I reinstalled the window sill and then panel, it took all of 2 minutes.

Did you notice an increase in the volume overall?

I have a ‘21 TRD OR and I find that I often have to nearly max out the volume to get the volume I want sometimes.

In other vehicles, I’ve always been happy at around 50%

almost any speaker would be an upgrade over stock speakers, but some aftermarket would need more power to them. Use an amp or an aftermarket stereo . I have a sony 8100 and love it but want a factory look, and finally purchased a 2022 head unit. I don't think it will have enough power for the focal speakers i have so Ill probably buy an amp .
