I’ve had a Yakima GT 6 for years now, I’ve gone on all types of trails with no issues, it fits nice a tight on my frontrunner roofrack. Just make sure you use common sense when loading it up, don’t overload it and tie everything down nice a snug. One thing I’ll recommend is to get the type that opens on both passenger and driver side for convenience.

I was in the same place. I also had a Yakima roof basket and it was just very inconvenient and also exposed to the elements.

I changed to a Yakima CBX 18 and never turned back. It's the biggest box in length which will allow your trunk door to still open and not overhang the front. It also has some decent height so you are not restricted to low profile items.

The only painful part of this change is that my clearance now is almost 8 feet. I can't get anywhere in parking lots that have restrictions for taller trucks. Storing this box is a bit of a pain also, it's huge and occupies some good real estate inside my garage when it's off. The payoff, it stores a lot , nothing gets wet, and it doesn't look hideous since the CBX line matches the truck lines quite well.

Assuming you have the clearance or ceiling height (luckily my garage ceilings are nearly 10 feet tall), have you thought about an overhead storage rack for storing the box? That's what I do for mine and it's such a great use of one (since it's a question of size more than weight).

If you're lucky you can probably set it up to not interfere with car space in the garage (I use the area above my third car bay which basically ends up being a storage area for our house).
