Cargo box recommendation

Hello all,
With both dogs in the back of my 2016 SR5 (with third row seating, so the floor sits higher), we don't have room for a lot of room for our luggage on family road trips (two growing boys). I have the factory Toyota cross bars on my truck, so I'd like to find a cargo box to use up there for family road trips. Thule's website tells you if you don't use their cross bars or racks you are on your own, so I was hoping to get some recommendations as to what would work. We aren't looking to store anything other than soft duffel bags for trips, so we need something decent sized, but not huge. Any recommendations would be appreciated - doesn't need to be a specific brand, I just threw out Thule because I have used their stuff before and found it works well. Thank you in advance.

I have a Yakima cargo carrier that I have used many times on other vehicles, but had a problem with my '18 4Runner: the cross rails on the 4Runner sit too close to the roof that I was afraid the Yakima mounting hardware would scratch the paint. I even tried some after market cross bars, but they were about the same distance from the roof.

Eventually, I sold my OEM roof rails and cross bars and got the OEM TRD roof top cargo carrier. It is more like a cargo box in of itself. You can even add additional cross bars to really make it into a box. The Yakima cargo carrier won't fit it due to the high side and back rails.

I couldn't be happier with my Yakima Skybox 16 on a pair of LFD crossbars.

Ruggedized Crossbar - 5th Gen 4Runner – LFD Off Road

They're the best bolt on cross bars you can get IMHO.

There's a few threads on this topic, including one specific with the LFD bars. Give it a quick search...

I've been using a Thule Motion XT box with my Toyota OEM cross bars for 4 years now (2019 4Runner ). it does sit very close to the rear 'shark fin' fairing but no issues at all

+1 on the Thule Motion XT (large here) on Thule Aerobars. Super easy on and off, and solid construction.
