Can i Calibrate the computer average mpg>

Computer "Average mpg" if off by 1mpg compared to the mpg calculated the old fashioned way (divide miles travelled by the amount of gasoline needed to full). Car mpg = 17.4, calculated mpg = 18.5.

I trust the calculated method, so is there a way to calibrate the mpg displayed by the car ?

I am not sure, but for my 4runner, the variation between manually calculated and computer average has varied based on use. When I have a heavy load or I am towing, calculated tends to be better than computer. With light loads and highway it is usually worse. Variance is never more than +/- 1 mpg. I have not tested for temperature impact. I have no clue why this would be. I am running slightly larger tires than stock.

No. It is only a guess anyways, and sometimes a very poor guess.

Whelp, mine is extremely accurate.
From and old post…
Quote:
My on-board computer is very accurate.
Wanna know how accurate?
This is for 115k miles of mileage tracking. 395 fill-ups.
Average of computer readings (computer reset at every fill-up): 20.91mpg
Average of manually calculated readings: 20.98mpg
Total mileage/total gas: 20.97mpg

The worst differences between manually calculated and the on-board computer has been +1.57mpg and -1.46mpg

Out of 395 fill-ups, only 15 times has the difference between hand calculated and on-board computer has exceeded 1mpg.

Maybe it's something else than Variance, since Variance in this case doesn't matter.
