How does 4Runner know when key fob is inside to stay locked from an assailant?

So with the push button 4Runners, at least for the Premiums, the vehicle senses as you approach (with the key fob) so that all you need do is pull on the door handle and it will automatically unlock. My question is, if you get into the vehicle and close the door and lock it, how does the vehicle sense that the key fob is now inside? Couldn't an assailant/criminal just walk up, pull the door, and it unlock for them as well?

There are sensors inside that can tell when the key is inside, not outside. There is a diagram in the owners manual that shows where those sensors are located.

Yes. Vehicles with the optional OEM VIP 3200 security system (https://autoparts.toyota.com/product...200-pt39803101) will do that, for it has a microphone to detect someone trying to break the glass. Any loud noise, including gun fire, will set off the alarm.
