Dealer recommends brake "cleaning" for $200 on my 2022 with 20k. Anyone else get this
Had my car in for oil change today and they recommended lubricating the brake calipers due to them not moving due to rust.
My car is a 2022 with 20k.
Anyone else getting this recommendation? Sounds like a money grab to me.
He said it should be done every 15k, but never mentioned it on my other 4runner with 32k on it.
At $200 every 15k, I'd rather just replace pins when it needs brakes.

Now we don't deal with much rust in the Southwest, but this sounds like a complete BS money grab to me. Never heard of this being necessary on any vehicles I've owned.

Nope.
If your calipers weren't moving due to rust, you wouldn't be able to stop. I would make him show me the rust and how/why the calipers aren't moving.
I sincerely doubt you have much if any rust on such a young vehicle.

Highly doubtful that they will do anything except take your $$$, maybe spray brake cleaner.
I pull the pins and caliper bolts and re-lube them every 15-30k. But I didn’t need to start this until 80k. Still on the original pads at 133k.
Brakepad check at 32,000 Miles, 80,000+ Miles,101,000 Miles

Not really. They would still work in stopping, the issue is the pads wouldn’t retract with the pistons when not braking and so the brakes would drag.
Agree you definitely don’t need this service at such a low age and mileage. There are some threads of people experiencing brake drag due to this issue, so I do think there is some merit to removing and re-greasing your pins/slides at a higher mileage. When really depends on your environment and use case.

So how did they determine the brake calipers were not moving without pulling wheels and doing a check? Normally this is not part of an oil change procedure!

If you drive in rust zone, calipers do stuck after couple winters. no harm will be done if brakes every spring disassembled and cleaned from dust and rust. easy to do it yourself, or for handless drivers - pay to someone. brake calipers do stuck (freeze, shot, rust, etc.) due to lack of maintenance, that's it. If you drive in rust zone.

"Free oil changes" is Toyota's biggest scam.
Look at all the faces of the people in the waiting room, wasting away part of their day, it's not a happy place.
The best part is when they pull you back to service area and drop crap like the OP got, out of earshot of the other victims.

I'd have to see the brake calipers in question, but I certainly have seen some rusty, crusty calipers that didn't allow free movement of the pads, and eventually the pistons.
In a highly corrosive environment like western New York in winter, cleaning and lubing calipers could very well be appropriate.

Yes, my time is valuable and I will not sit at a dealership waiting for some apprentice jackhole tech to do an oil change that I can do in about 20 minutes.

i'd leave a google review about this particular dealership and their brake cleaning recommendation... find a new place to service if you can

Dealer recommends I buy a $50 bottle of anal lube since I know nothing about my car and I will do anything they tell me I should.
They say it will make it easier when I get my bill. Anyone else get this?

Lexus does this same nonsense-they want you to bring in your car every 6 months or 5k miles.
