One thing to be aware of is very cold weather. I left my jump pack in my 4Runner last winter and apparently it froze. The battery swelled up and split the case.Even though the status lights showed it was still charged, I was really afraid to use it for Lithium batteries can catch fire! So I took it to a Lithium battery recycler and bought a new one.

this is the problem I had with a lithium jump pack too. my last 4runner battery was 5+ years old and I knew it likely wouldn't make it through another winter.

when it died in the middle of winter my lithium pack wouldn't work. I still have my jumper cables but also picked up (on sale) an autowit supercap2 to give it a try in the future

Fortunately it rarely gets below 30 degrees here, but also will need to keep this in mind when traveling for ski trips. It's pretty rare we see much below zero though so I imagine that limited exposure probably can't mess things up too much.

Getting a new one once the battery was compromised was definitely the right choice. Wouldn't want a car fire over a jumper combusting.

I have the Noco GB40 and it's great. Got it on Prime Day or one of the sales for like $65. I don't think I've needed it on a car yet, but it's come in handy with my lawn mowers and ATVs countless times. Every few months I take it out and plug it in the wall just incase it lost any charge. It's an essential item to have IMO and takes up close to zero space.

I recently bought 2 of the NOCO GB40 Boost Plus units. They say to hook it up and then wait 20 or 30 seconds before attempting to start the vehicle.

They also say to top them off every 4 to 6 months, although they should hold a 70% charge after 12 months.

NOCO is well known for the their Genius line of boat battery chargers, although I did buy a Minn Kota 3-bank charger for my boat.

This is a big step up from the 1986 Subaru GL wagon I used on the Outer Banks beaches for 14 years. That thing would go anywhere in the sand on 185/70-13 tires. Dual range 5 speed, factory skid plate, 3 position manually adjustable rear shocks and armored exhaust. All factory, including the white spoke wheels. The front sub frame finally rusted apart.

Got home from a 4 day work trip and saw my wife had left the lights on on her 4R for an unknown amount of time. All the lights. Low beam, fogs, and ditch. Just grabbed the Noco that had been sitting in the back of her vehicle for a year or more untouched and it jump started it no problem. Pulled it into the garage to hook up to a trickle charger and left it there. We keep a Noco jump starter in both vehicles

The last time I used jumper cables on a truck, the PCM went bad soon after. Coincidence? Maybe, but I´m not taking any chances. I use boosters and nothing else.

The Noco sounds like the perfect solution - smaller and easier to handle than my big, old jumper cables, and safer. I can also use it to charge my cell phone at our off-the-grid cabin. All I have to do is charge it once in a while.

But, with that big Lithium battery pack, have there been any reports of these things exploding/catching fire?

jumping

If the manual has jumping instructions and you follow them there should not be a problem.

I have the NOCO GB40. It works great as I've used it 3 times now to jump start my '19 T4R ORP without any problems. With the matching storage case it fits perfectly in the little storage cubby hole above the passenger rear wheel well.

I used to have a set up jumper cables crammed in there with my tool kit roll but the NOCO is a much better tool and setup.

A big thing to remember when jumping a vehicle is right when the vehicle that is being jumped starts make sire you disconnect the jumper cables!! You don't want both cars connected while there both are running, that is when damage is done.
