5th Gen Stock Tire Nitto Terra Grappler

I purchased a TRD PRO back in April of this year (23). The stock tires are Nitto Terra Grapplers. They do not appear to be Terra Grappler G2's unless I am missing something. Didn't they stop making the regular Grappler a long time ago? Did I get old tires or is this just a Japan vs US market thing? I can't seem to find any info on this online, but I haven't ran any serial numbers or anything yet on the tires to check manufacturing dates. Sort of wondering if they make the regular Terra Grapplers in the overseas market and that is what comes on the 4Runner from Japan. Just wondering if anyone can shed some light on this. I don't really have an issue with the tire right now, I was just reseaching tires for my Tundra and wondered what came on the 4Runner and went out and looked real quick.

You are correct. The normal Terra has been gone for awhile, but always just remained on the TRD Pro 4Runners. I always assumed it was just a cost thing and Nitto just gives them to them cheaper or something.

I also heard the G2 was going in the trash soon too by way of the new Recon Grappler. Judging by how few sizes they have on the website left I'd say that's probably a safe assumption. I had them twice before and they were terrible, honestly. Recon Grapplers seem to be much better.

I have seen that statement made a lot in my searches on this. Have also seen a lot of comments that these original TG's are better than the G2's. I would think the liability would be too high for them to be putting 6 year old tires on a new car though. That's why I wonder if they are still making them but just don't sell them anymore in the US.

It's not uncommon for a tire to stick around in a stock size including some limited production run once it's certified on a vehicle. I don't fully understand what goes into it, but the BFG KM was the same was on the Jeep Wrangler JK (which lasted as a platform for close to ten years). I actually think the KM3 may have been out by the time they buried that tire at the JL transition.

You could only purchase a KM in the stock Wrangler size I remember for awhile, just like the Nitto Terra Grappler on the 4Runner TRD Pro.

That KM was a different tire even from the original KM1 that was only made for the JK to allegedly be a little better on the road. Jeep is weird with tires too as they even put KM2s on other special edition JK Wranglers. Gladiator Rubicon's get Falken AT3W while JL Rubicon's get BFG KO2s. Seems like the OG Terra Grappler is in the same boat here as the one off KM. I always find it weird that Toyota puts very mild Goodyears on the TRD Pro Tacoma, but I just always assumed it all goes out to bid and they take which works best for them.

I've run Exo Grapplers and Trail Grapplers on my 2012 JKU with no complaints, and have Nomad Grapplers on my Land Rover currently, but I've always heard the Ridge Grapplers are primarily a mall crawler tire.

Look aggressive but very prone to chunking and sidewall damage if you take them in any real rocks. Personally the lack of a 3PMSF designation was always a vote against them for me also (albeit, the Geolander I've run for most of my 2020 is not either)...
