6112/5100 Combo
Is anyone running this combo? I know the 6112s are supposed to be paired with the 5160s but I really don't want to deal with a reservoir in the rear. Looking to see how you like this (or don't) or if there were any issues.
I ran 5100's all the way around on my first 5th gen (SR5). I have a 21 Off Road with KDSS now and I am looking at this combo.
Thanks

5100/5160 are the same shocks, only difference is the reservoir.
Probably 85% of people dont need the reservoir and its more for show it seems
I have the 6112 /5100 now, I did have the 5160s but one shock started leaking after about 70k miles . Initially purchased replacement 5160s at a good price but decided to go with 5100s. I was able to sell the 5160s at a good profit to cover the cost of the 5100s.
Overall its a great ride, good on turns and firm but not too harsh. Once / if the 6112s give out I plan on installing dobinsons to try something new

Save your money they are garbage. I had the 6112/5160 combo, the rear shocks blew around 20K miles, one of the front springs broke around 30K and most recently, I went to change out the strut mounts and the shaft of one the front strut unthreaded from the body, making it totally useless.
If you're looking for something similar, go for Eibach or Old Man Emu.

Not the best of reviews, could you elaborate more on your experience? Driving conditions? Both rear shocks blew? actual shock or reservoir leaking?

Just normal street/mall crawling, nothing out of the ordinary. And yes both of the rear shocks were toast not just leaking. I noticed the rear end started to clunk going over bumps so I took off one of the shocks to inspect. It compressed with almost no effort and did not return at all. The front spring just broke out of nowhere, no off roading incident, pot holes, etc. There was a little rust forming on it but nothing out of the ordinary for a 5ish year old set up. Bilstein did replace both of them under warranty but the process was not easy or quick.

For the money, it’s the best setup. Good, comfortable and controlled ride. I have close to 70k on the front and on my 2nd set of 5100’s on the rear. I have almost 146k on my 4Runner. Before the 6112 on the front, I was running 5100’s on the front as well.

Thanks all. That helps. I appreciate the response.
Will be looking for the best prices for the 6112/5100 set up.
Let the modding begin again.

cant complain on the price vs performance gain. 6112's are absolutely amazing.

5 years use of the shocks with 4k miles per year
parts will fail and shocks are typically ones to do so. The OEM shocks well those seem to be a different story. The 5160s I had were from the TRD clearance sale from the FJ, manufacturer date was probably 2007-12 maybe. I ended up with 5-6 years of on road use with around 70k miles.

check out wheelers off road and their affiliated sites, pricing will vary. There might be a 15% off coupon floating around too, plus avoid tax if out of state.

Yep, my 14 only has 50k on it, my commute is very short and we take the Tundra for most road trips.
I think the consensus will be that the Bilsteins are good for the money but I've have three different sets and I have not been impressed but that's just my experience.

Also Black Friday deals will be coming soon, I scored the Eibach Prolift Stage 1 kit for our Tundra a few years ago for $500.

I’ve had this exact same set up on my 4Runner for the last 4 years. Handles almost like a sports car on turns and almost no nose dives on hard stops but the ride is a little on the firm side. One thing I noticed that I haven’t quite figured out why is that when I go over speed bumps it’s a bit harsh but when I fly over large speed humps I feel like I’m gliding over them. I do have a 135 lb front steel bumper so I don’t know if that changes anything.

Ran 6112s on my 4th gen and also had a buddy running them on his tacoma and we both got 40k out of them before they started leaking. Probably ran them a little harder than the average person. You can also run a icon 2.0 shock in the rear and the valving works quite well with each other and you get a larger piston than the 5100s. Overall I think the 6112s are a good value as far as price and performance but they are not rebuildable so if they go there done.

x2 on the rear setup. we ran fox 2.0's in the rear, and it was fantastic with the 6112's up front.
