Is the heated steering wheel controlled in any way - or is it just on or off?

You'd need to use a latching relay that resets when the vehicle voltage is removed.

So the BMW momentary switch would create the 12v signal to "latch" the relay on, and would stay on until the 12v line voltage drops when the car turns off.

The one I chose was only on or off. Though there is an option for a 'dimmer' switch where you can adjust the intensity but it required more parts. I chose the basic on/off because it had less parts. Where I installed, inside the steering wheel, there isn't much room.

Is there a link you can send me for this relay? It is something I would like to look into, thanks!

The wrap finally showed up and had some time this weekend to put it on. It is not perfect but overall I am pretty happy with how it turned out. Here is also a shot of the stitching and another shot of the switch and how easy accessible it is for my fingers.

Stitching looks great, love the overall look. Did you buy it precut and ready to sew on? Nice work man

Yes I just bought the cover which needs to be stitched on. Lots of options out there but I went with one from East Detailing.

I believe the wrap would fit a lot better if I didn't remove the previous leather wrapping. This product from East Detailing is meant to go over existing steering wheel leather so I had a bit more slack I had to play with but overall I am very happy with the finished product.

The link in my very first post, the OP installed the heat pads over existing steering wheel and wrapped over. Would still work either way. If I were to do it again I would probably do it over the existing steering wheel.

So I was able to remove the factory steering wheel and install the new steering wheel. I did a mock up of the wiring where I plugged in the wires onto the pins without inserting yet into the connector (2nd pic). It all worked great with no issues when tested. The 2 wires went into the 2 connectors behind the airbag. I ran a power wire from an empty slot in the fuse block to the empty spot in the clockspring pin as previously posted. I also ran a ground to the 2nd empty slot in clockspring pin as also previously mentioned.

Now the hiccup I ran into. The 2 wires behind the airbag fit perfectly into the existing white connectors with no issue. I was under the impression that I could do the same for the black connector on the backside for the clockspring. Unfortunately the 2 wires do NOT fit into the black connector. If they fit this mod would have been a success.

Now I am looking for an extra black connector with pigtail harnesses already installed. Does anyone know the part number? If I get this, I can depin the extra connector and install them into existing connector and this mod will be done and finished. So this is where it's at for now...

So I found a solution to my issue about the 2 wires going into the back of the clock spring! I found this male to female 12pin harness on AliExpress! It took a few weeks for shipping but showed up today. These fit perfectly for what I require it for. Only downside, which isn't a huge deal is they are longer than what I need. They mate perfectly with oem connector and actually clicks in place unlike other cheap overseas options. Here are a few shots of it. I will install this weekend so this mod can finally be done! All I need to do is splice into the harness that corresponds to the correct pins.

I was able to modify and add the harness. Happy to finally say that this mod has been done and is a success! In time for the first snowfall of the year here in Vancouver, Canada. Had it on for the 45min drive to work with no issues and no overheating. Just a nice constant heat for my hands that is not overly hot.
