Do I really need new brakes??

I have a 2019 4Runner with 35K miles on it. I am at a tire shop getting new tires and they said I need new brakes and rotors.

Is this possible? I think I only changed my brakes and pads on my 2007 4Runner like twice since it got totaled a few years ago. And it had 200k on the clock.

I will have to look at them when I get home. I am thinking they are just trying to drum up businesss and sell me stuff I don’t need.

We live in the flatlands, don’t tow, and we barely drive this car.

My wife took her car into get its oil changed. They said she needed 4 new tires. I just put new tires on her car like 6 months before…..

Edit 2: update, total scammers. Brakes are fine and only have 32k miles on the 4Runner. Plenty of miles left on them.

Of course it’s possible, especially pads, but based on the information provided absolutely nobody can answer if you really need them. Take it elsewhere for a second opinion

I would never trust an oil change operation or tire shop to tell me about what maintenance my car needs. I would never, ever go to an oil change place at all. I've heard too many horror stories about forgotten drain plugs, missing filters, wrong oil, missing oil, etc.

If you don't know a lot about cars your safest bet, not cheapest, is the Toyota dealership. I have never been told I needed work when I didn't. If you want to use a private shop, Google reviews for it. Google reviews provide a great insight into a garage's honesty and workmanship. Not everyone will be happy, of course, but 95% satisfied customers and a good BBB review goes a long way to finding a good shop. The same goes for a tire shop. Google them.

That being said, 200K miles is a long way for just 2 front brake pad changes. I do a lot of my own maintenance and I would say 50 to 60K for front pads and 75 to 100K for the rear. Brake pads themselves are not expensive. It's the labor that usually costs you.

I learned this lesson years ago when the dealer said I needed new brakes at 40k. I bought new pads and prepared to replace them myself when I soon realized they were practically brand new. I sold the car 10 years later at 120k with the unused pads in the trunk.
I’ve got 135k on my 4Runner’s original pads. Front and rear.
Still a minimum of 5mm left on the front pads. Rears are better than that. I’ve done brake fluid changes twice.

Brakepad check at 32,000 Miles, 80,000+ Miles,101,000 Miles

I also have a 2019. I replaced my rear pads only at about 92k miles. Front pads only at 115k miles. Left the rotors alone in both cases because they’re fine.
