Maintenance Required message

Got the maintenance required message. Not a big deal. I know how to reset it. I'd like to know what the interval is for it to come on. This summer I did a bunch of maintenance and set all the reminders in the maintenance section of the head unit including the tire rotation reminder. It's set for 5k and is between 300 and 400 miles from being due. Everything else is well within the dates or mileage I set it for. Nonetheless, I still got the message on the dash at start up and the vehicle mileage it between 109k and 110k.

So, what triggers the message?

As I remember, the only thing the maint required message is tied to is the oil change interval. When you reset the light, it resets the interval to Toyota's suggested mileage to the next oil change. Not sure what that is (7K miles maybe) but it really depends on your driving conditions anyway.

Did you do what a 2016 manual tells you to do? This is not the H/U.

I said resetting the message is not the issue. I know how to do that.

The vehicle has not traveled 5000 miles since the last reset of the dash message. I set ALL of the scheduled maintenance in the multimedia center (i.e. the head unit) and the nearest maintenance is rotating the tires which I'm a couple hundred miles short of. Additionally, I am not at a 5000 mile interval for total vehicle mileage either so an arbitrary metric of 5000 miles being the trigger is not accurate either. I get that the possibility exists that if the message triggers and you continue to drive, when you reset the message the 5000 miles resets so a mismatch in total miles and the interval would happen.

So, does the message come in early to remind you as you approach the service "limit"?

Toyota recommends oil changes every 3000-5000 miles so shouldn't the message occur at 3k? Further, synthetic oil has a 7500-10,000 mile life as recommended by Toyota.

If I remember correctly, on my 2017 it starts to popup at start up (but goes away) about 400 miles before the 5000 mile interval. At some point before the 5000 mile mark,(can't remember if it is 100 or 200 miles before) it stays on to remind you that you are almost at the interval and will not go away until it is reset.

The light comes on every 5000 miles because that's the maintenance interval. Maintenance isn't only engine oil changes. You can see all the maintenance and inspections listed out in the owner's manual. Early on in the vehicle life, it is a lot of inspections, tire rotations, etc. As the mileage gets up there, it gets more intense for drivetrain fluid changes. BTW, the oil change interval is 10k miles for normal driving; 5k miles is for severe service. The criteria for severe service is also in the owner's manual.

Agreed. 5k. My 2012 and my 2016 agreed as well. It doesn't measure oil life or anything based on usage. It's just a 5k timer.

I think it behaves the same as my FJ Cruiser did - its owners manual was a bit more explicit - the Maint. reqd light would start coming on at 4.5K miles since last reset -

From my FJC manual:
