Old Man Emu 889 rear springs, why?

So seems come across many companies selling the old man emu kits with the lightest rear spring option being 889. And many installing this (and say has stiff ride).

But when look at OME application catalog, the 889 is not even listed as an option and 895 is suggested for the rear. When talked to ARB Rep on the phone he stated not sure why 889s are being used?

So I’m confused, why are many shops (yotamafia, toytec, etc) selling the OME kits with 889 springs instead of 895?

Would not the 889s be a bit longer than the 895s, resulting in less performance from the matching OME shock resulting in less down travel thus a harsher ride?

I know when had an FJ cruiser I used 895 for the rear with good results.

Just not sure why 889s are being sold with the kits.

It's pretty difficult to find any specifics on these coils, however I found a chart on the OPTOffroad site that I copied here. There's two versions of the 895 listed that seem to be similar with the E version being shorter with thicker wire although providing the same lift and spring rate so it likely provides a stiffer ride. That being said the 889 and 895 really aren't much different from a spec perspective.
OME in my reading has always been known for providing a rough ride almost regardless of the vehicle. Based on that I've never used them. I've had really good luck with Dobinson's coils FWIW.
Here's the info I found from the OPTOffroad site: (Forgive the image size/quality it was hard to manipulate)

One comment in addition to all this, specificaly in the rear, running a heavier spring rate coil with no additional load on it will always provide a Shi**y ride. I believe the OEM coils are 180#/inch for reference.

5th Gen 4Runner / 3rd Gen Tacoma / GX460
Front coils:
  • 884: 2.5" lift with factory weight on front end
  • 885: 2.5-3" lift with front armor (100-200 lbs)
  • 887: 2.5-3" lift with heavy front armor (200+ lbs)
Rear coils: (except Tacomas)
  • 889: 2.5-3" lift with factory weight on rear end
  • 898: 2.5-3" lift with 250-500 lbs over factory weight on rear end
  • 899: 2.5-3" lift with 500+ lbs over factory weight on rear end

For 5th gen 4Runners Specifically,
895 are light duty for 2" lift, standard load (still stiffer than stock)
889 are for medium duty (+200lbs) and 2.5" to 3" lift
898 are HD (+400lb) and 2.5" lift
899 are Super HD (+500-800) with 2.5" lift

Yotamafia does offer the 895 in their customizable kits. That's where above info is pulled from.

Toytec is terrible at recommending spring rates. They put 700s on their rebranded front coilovers (elkas) and I would avoid them at all costs. I learned this the hard way.

Ive run 889s with a fridge and tools (~150lbs) in the back for years and glad I went that route. Perfect lift height and spring rate for my setup and Ive heard few other complain about these. Even unloaded it rides as expected from a lifted 4Runner. DYOR and good luck.

I'm currently running OME 888 springs on the front, they are for a Tacoma and work great on the 5th gen 4runner
