Issue with New Wheels

Recently purchased a set of new wheels and kept the old tires (only a few months) on them. After the work was done, I noticed a vibration in the steering wheel when approaching 45-50mph and when actively accelerating at that speed at that speed as well. Previously, this was never an issue. Took it back to to Discount Tire where they did an alignment, rotation, balancing, and adding those weight clips to the wheels. Unfortunately, I am still feeling the vibration. What gives? What should I ask to be done to remedy the issue?

First, did you use the right lug nuts? Original Toyota wheels have a hub centric mounting and requires lug nuts with flat washers. But many after market wheels need cone shaped lug nuts to center the wheel on the axle.

What tires do you have? Many off road tires, especially the BFG KO2, are notoriously difficult to balance.

It could be the new wheels have a problem; they could be off center. I had an after market wheel many years ago that one was off center. You should be able to tell by measuring the run out while the wheels are spinning, both rotation run out and lateral (side to side) run out.

It's a common issue with 4Runners, I've rebalanced my wheels numerous times and still have the wheel shake at speed. Drives me nuts

Toyota truck steering racks from this generation of vehicles are very sensitive to wheel balance.

You need to have your wheels/tires Roadforce balanced. Roadforce machines will give you a number that tells you how out of round the tire is. For SUVs and trucks, under 10 is great, 10-20 is acceptable, 20+ is bad. When you get the tires balanced, ask for the Roadforce numbers for each tire. Then have the highest numbers put on the rear. This will clear up most of your vibration.

You will probably still get some vibration when the vehicle has been sitting for a while, especially when it is cold, as the tires tend to get a flat spot where they have been sitting. This vibration usually goes away once the tire is warmed up.
