Replacing seats info!!
This is going to be the start of an information gathering thread.
This is for the people who want to at least entertain the idea of changing out their seats to something more comfortable or stylish. I personally cant stand these #$%$ seats and I am not going to bother spending upwards of a grand to recover them when there are many other affordable options available.
Im looking for all and any help to make sure that I or anyone else that wants to change out their seats do it as safe as possible.
Below could be an example of how this information might be gathered or shared....this is a work in progress and will be updated accordingly.
Hope this works~
Obstacles:
Seat Air bags
Seat weight Sensors
Seatbelt Sensors
Communication to the CPU/Brain
Technical Specs:
3.3 OHM resistance for the Airbags (not fully confirmed)
Lessons Learned:
Proceedure:

Have you had any luck chasing down a good set of seat brackets? I asked the guys at Corbeau and they didn't think there was anything on the market yet.

I think that would be the biggest obstacle. Coming from the tuner world all of the airbag/seatbelt shit is fixable with resistors or re-using parts from the original seat (weight sensor). For the brackets though any metal fabricator should be able to make custom seat rails if it came down to it.

I have a 4th gen but I did a 5th gen steering wheel and airbag swap and everything works. Granted it is a steering wheel but I think Toyota likes to share airbag connectors between other models. This may work in your favor if there is another toyota vehicle that you like the seats better from. I have also heard sometimes you can put a resistor in the connector to trick the airbag computer into thinking there is an airbag there. granted this sacrifices safety. Good luck.

Lol. It’s been 8 years, so I doubt anything will come into fruition. It’ll have to be custom made, though I feel that you should modify whatever donor seat bracket you are using.

Yea...this whole thing has been s**t show unfortunately...Its been nearly impossible to find or get any specific info in the system...and yea, any brackets/bases would have to be fab'd (not a big deal)

Have you looked into swapping in seats from a limited? Not sure how much the internals are different but they are nice soft leather. They have vented seats so you'd have to probably pull the switches and whatever controller may be in the dash. They are also memory seats with the settings on the driver door.

I will say this, the seats are not very comfy for sure, but I was amazed how lite they were. Passenger side with the motors and heated seat was only 41lbs, Driver side was 57....my primary reason was to save weight, but to get a seat I would live with on a day to day basis, it just wasn't worth it.

To update this: I took a 10hr road trip in a Corolla three days ago and my back still hurts. Same seats essentially, but the 4runner has them raised a bit. Literally one of the worst seats I have ever sat in. Sooo...
I measured seats at a Nissan dealership (since I can sit in those seats for 20ish hours straight, aside from getting gas) and although the seatback is 1" taller and deeper, they are the same size. The rails are also the same length and width.
Supplying the motor with 12v is the easy part. Also no need to touch the seatbelt since they are universal, except for the wiring on the female end possibly. The tricky thing would be the airbag in the seat.
Any idea what the wiring for the airbag would be like?
And..
Do the rails bolt onto the legs? Or are they one piece brackets?

New Seats
This all sounds like way to much trouble for a car seat that is perfectly fine for a $40k SUV. I'm a skinny, 175 lb, 6 foot tall old fart and they don't bother me on long trips. If you want better seats, shop for a luxury sedan or a Range Rover (I have no idea what those seats are like) for twice the price.
That said, I'd like to have leather seats like the ones in the T4R Limited. I'd easily consider reupholstering with new leather when the cloth seats start to show their wear.

Or everyone has different bodies and preferences. One of the biggest complaints for all Toyotas are the seats, especially for the 4runner and Tacoma. How long has the Tacoma been out, yet there still isn't more than a 4-way manual seat? That is utterly pathetic. This also means that just because a vehicle is $40k doesn't mean that it has any quality to it.
Some people don't like the Rogue's seats, yet I do. Do I think the overall quality of the seats are better than the 4runners? Yes, I do. They actually have real leather and they fit ME better. You don't have to go to a luxury brand to get seats that fit you, as they might not even fit you at all.

Sure you are...
Might as well do the whole set so the fronts match the back. Report back and let us know how it goes!
