2016 limited with premium sound system

My front dash speakers are shot and need to be replaced. The first question is how do I access them? The second question is are there any better drop in speakers to replace them with? Since I have not yet seen the speakers through the grill cover I can only assume the sun has baked the foam surrounds.
Any advice will be appreciated.

The grill just pops off, then there are two screws/bolts that hold them in.

At one time OEM Audio Plus sold a speaker upgrade package, which I got, but now I can't find it on their web site. Now all they have is complete system upgrades including amps, etc.

I was pretty happy with the JBL system until the dash speakers started crackling. I just want to replace them with something as good or better but I do not want to start cutting the harness. I'm okay if I need to do some trimming around and below to fit new speakers but not okay with messing with the existing wire harness. Any advice will be appreciated.

Great video but was it in a 4Runner with the JBL sound system ot just the standard system? A lot of the replies here say for the "NON JBL".

yeah I got excited when I saw the link but a lot of the youtube replies state they aren't plug and play in Limited's with JBL, that they have different plugs.

YUP. From all that I have read the JBL system requires us to cut into the harness for some reason and I have not yet found the correct answer. I think I will have to pop the cover and pull a speaker out just so I can get a better idea of the issue. It is pretty odd that the dash speakers are blown because 95% of my listening is on XM news at very low volumes.

you are right, its not as easy as a non-jbl.
I did have to cut the wires and off of the stock dash speaker and mount them to the aftermarket set, to make it plug into the stock location.

Thanks Masterfoo, Please tell me if the JBL pictured is a speaker or just a tweeter?
I also want to know if when you cut the wires and hooked up the replacement speakers if it changed any of the original functions such as the EQ the JBL head unit has.

Crutchfield has wiring adapters so you don't need to cut any wire.

I did a chat with Crutchfield. They recommended I buy Kenwood KFC-X2C speakers but could not say if I would have to cut any of the harness or if they had an adaptor connector. Very frustrating and way too cold here now to play.

Try Crutchfield, I have been using them for 30 years. They will have exact fit speakers and any adapters that you would need to connect the speakers to the factory wiring harness without any modification. Great people that are just a phone call away to help you.

Thanks Jeff, Maybe you missed my post #13 above. Crutchfield has always been my first source and they usually have the answers but not this time.
