5th Gen Cold air intake options

I just got a 5th Gen 4runner. A search of "Cold Air Intake" on this site doesnt turn up much info. From what I have found here and elsewhere, it looks like there are two main options...
1. The TRD CAI mod (which no longer has any pictures.. Ill just imagine it in the engine bay lol) How-To-Guide (TRD CAI) Installation

2. and the K&N CAI are there any other options? What gives the best performance (MPG and Power)?

Thanks!

Just drop a K&N in your stock box if it will make you feel better.

2nd this.....I was bored and did the TRD CAI bought the parts separate during a trd sale and it was $150-200 range. I lost about 1 MPG and some gained some sound at around 3k rpm. Its one of those mods that are fun to work on but its not needed.

Agree with this. I got a K&N to replace the OEM filter. Easy to install, and not expensive like the so called CAI.

Ambient air intakes are great at 2 things. Lightening your wallet, making the engine louder. That's it.

Don't let people try and educate you on things they do not know or have experience in, I tested the AFE last year:

AFE Intake Dyno & Install Inside

I also did a K&N drop in filter, but also swapped in the TRD piece that goes into the fender from the air box. It’s larger diameter, so theoretically it will allow more flow just as the K&N does. I’m pleased with how’s it’s working and it costs much less than a full cold air intake.

If you’re going to change your intake don’t swap one panel filter setup for another prettier one. AFE Momentum GT intake gets you a big nasty cone filter and pairs well with the TRD fender scoop mentioned above.

Haven’t been on in a while greetings all 🤙🏻

Does that mate directly with the OEM air box?

I have the part number for that as PTR03-35090-AC. Is that correct? Trd Intake Flow Accelerator. Air Intake System. | Part #PTR0335090AC | Toyota Auto Parts

Installation instructions have you removing the wheel well liner. Can it be installed from the engine side without removing the wheel well liner?

Thanks all for the input... @LunarORP I did catch your thread on the AFE, very good info! Did you have a thread for your tune as well?

Looks correct. Sorry, I don’t have the part number on hand.

I installed from the engine bay; removed the filter, unbolted air box, slipped old part out and larger one in, reassembled. Done. The new piece is soft rubber so it’ll compress to go through the hole into fender.

Unfortunately I haven’t got there yet. Things have come since that are in the way of the play things. Hopefully soon!

Isn't the stock setup a "cold air intake"? It draws air from outside the engine bay through the wheel well.
