Trade 4R for GX460 ?
I have a 2020 TRD ORP W/KDSS 25K mi, no issues at all, love the vehicle, wife is in process of trading her Lexus ES350 for a RX350, while at dealer I saw a new GX460 in Caviar with tan interior, Mark Levinson Stereo, 4.6 V8, giant screen with Apple Car Play and Android and a bunch of other features for $58K after all discounts. Was thinking of trading in the 4R, don't really need it but the GX sure is nice. 4R is paid off. Salesman said the new GX will have the twin turbo V6 and more power, is loaded with tech features that the olde GX does not have. Is it worth upgrading to the GX460 ?

I’d think they would give a nice trade in on the 4Runner, but the end numbers would surely help you make a decision.
I test drove a 2022 GX and was impressed. The V8 is so smooth and surely will outlast the new engines.
At this point I’m deep in mods on my 2022 ORP and while I love it, if starting again I’d likely have gone with a GX (green with the black package please).
Then again, a 4Runner is the spiritual successor to the old Land Cruisers, so…..

You should also look at the new Land Cruise due out soon. They recently posted prices and "build your own" ability on the Toyota web site.

I would love to have a GX460. 1UR-FE was in production for 17 years so the bugs have been ironed out like Toyota always does. Sadly, my garage is marginal for overhead clearance so 4Runner was the best choice.

if its a 22-23 GX, it'll be one of the last ever with V8, and it's a beauty of a V8 at that. the 22-23s have car-play and are much more updated than the 17-21's tech wise (still not comparable to the 24's but for toyota its high tech). the 24's will certainly be nice, but unless you have new toy envyI would not let that stop you from looking at the current GX.
If it were me, and 58k fit the bill and they offered good money on your 22 4Runner, I would get it. We love or 2019 GX460.

$58k for what is I assume a new 2023 GX460? Your call. For reference, a 2024 GX550 starts at $64k with destination fee. A lot of forum members here seem to be afraid of the new generation of 4cyl and V6 Toyota engines. I am not one of those people. The 2022 GX interior update helped get it out of the stone age, but the 2024 new generation vehicle is much nicer and cohesive overall in my opinion. New twin-turbo V6 makes 479lb-ft of torque at 2000rpm, and much more horsepower than the old 4.6L as well.
If I'm bent on the "super old school vehicle forever" thing, I would just stick with the 2020 4Runner. If I was going to get out of it, I wouldn't really go for a heavier version of the same thing with slightly more displacement. I don't see the value proposition in getting out of a 2020 4Runner to spend $58k on the outgoing GX. If it were me, I'd probably wait a year and get into a 2025 GX550 if that's what I wanted. Or a Land Cruiser 250.

A personal choice, but the GX is better than the 4R in most categories by a large margin. That price is really good too. It depends on what you value. But stop listening to sales lol.

Depends on a person's priorities. If all the new electronic gadgets, electric everything, and a new twin-turbo engine are what you prize the most, then absolutely the GX is "better".
But if reliability is the top priority, you're not going to beat the current 4Runner. From all the reading I've been doing on automotive forums for the past couple years I can guarantee you that all those new electronics will be problematic. Go read the Tundra forums to hear about all the problems with the new Tundra with the twin-turbo V6.

Depends. It's been long enough now that I think many people forget that electronics dramatically improved reliability in the 80s and 90s.
As far as "all the problems with the new Tundra", the thing eeeverybody quotes is the one whole first batch of junk turbos from a junk supplier who got canned. I haven't heard any significant reliability problems from Tundras after the first few months of production. That engine is in the LX, Sequoia, and now other things, and it does not appear to be ruining lives.
First year teething problems happen on new platforms or powertrains sometimes. Some may not know or remember that the "impossibly reliable" 4.0L 1GR V6 had some issues including popping headgaskets on the first couple model years.
If you're pathologic about reliability, might as well stick with a 5th gen since the tech is 20 years old. I would consider a GX460 a slight downgrade in the reliability department, I have heard of plenty of those full-time transfer cases failing.
Toyota is not an American brand out to build trucks that puke at 80,000 miles, so I really wouldn't be worried about ANY new Toyota truck product. Anything can technically break, but it's all about likelihood, and Toyotas at large are unlikely to ruin your life or strand you.
Forums have a habit of amplifying a small amount of voices of people who have had problems. Read enough into forums and you'll think every vehicle is a ticking time bomb for everyone. The reality is that for every Toyota owner posting a problem on a forum, there's 50 owners who don't have problems, and therefore don't have anything to post. Ordinary people do not search for a forum and create an account just to post that everything is fine, all good in the neighborhood.

After looking at the GX more closely it is a nice vehicle no doubt, only thing that I don't like is the swing open rear hatch and hinged glass. 4R hatch open up and glass rear window slides down into hatch out of the way. To me this is hard to let go of, I remember being at an event and it started raining, I lifted rear hatch up and was able to sit on the rear bumper and stay dry. Plus the speakers in rear hatch play overhead and is a cool feature as well, two overhead courtesy lights too.Think I'll hang onto the 4R until something I like better comes along like the new Landcruiser or new GX550. All great replies though.

Yup, the barn door hinging is odd. A lift door is more practical most of the time. One thing about the barn door is that there's not a height concern in the garage when opening it. If my 4R rear hatch extends beyond the garage door opening while open, I have to use a piece of soft foam between it and the garage door header. The GX doesn't care.

Once you let your beautiful, well-maintained, low mileage T4R go, it's game over and that's it.
You can ALWAYS get a Lexus GS. Just imagine how you will feel when your 4TR is gone and stuff starts failing on the GX. GX still a very new model and uber loaded with electronics.
edit correction: GX 460 is 2023..but still.

You are correct ! My Nautical Blue 4R TRD ORP W/KDSS isn't going anywhere.
I thought about and would prob have to shell out $20K to make the deal.
It's a great vehicle with all the options, low miles, garage kept and well maintained. I'll keep it ! And it's paid for.
