Trading the 2020 for a 2024
Been contemplating trading in my 2020 TRD ORP W/ KDSS in Nautical blue,
dealer started at my vehicle and $16K. then $12K then $9800, so today and dealer made one final pitch. My vehicle and $6500 OTD for a 2024 TRD ORP W/KDSS and all the same options. That sounds tempting for sure.
However, what am I gaining in the 2024 over the 2020 besides a newer vehicle and the warranty ?
My 4R has only 25,700mi

I traded a 2021 Venture without KDSS but with low mileage for a 2023 ORP with KDSS. I also gained Blind Spot Monitor w/ Rear Cross Traffic Alert. The Venture could have kept me going forever, but I have no regrets for what I gained with the ORP. The decision making is a mixture of cold, practical gain vs. personal, emotional wishes and one's affluence. Sounds like you want the 2024. If you don't sweat the money, go for it. And who knows what the next gen 4Rs will be like?

There's no real win for you with a 24. It's the same vehicle and you would just be starting over on payments.

The updated safety stuff (TSS), full LED headlights. As you mention, the warranty. Plus, you’d have what is likely the last year of the 5th gen.

The ORP gained a heated steering wheel starting in 2023 as well.

Depends if you consider that worth it. Really the main thing is restarting the bumper to bumper warranty, 3 years, since the powertrains rarely fail. KDSS is pricey when it goes out.
As others have said, beyond that, you're getting the Toyota Safety Suite stuff, LED headlights, and the very lovely heated steering wheel.
If I was bent on driving a 5th gen 4Runner forever, and I could go 4 years newer to get one of the last ones, for $6,500 net, I would consider it. $6,000 would sound a little nicer.
Is yours on factory tires and wheels? If you upgraded that stuff, I would want to put it on the new truck as part of the deal.

^ this comment should be appreciated
you are basically trading in a new vehicle for another new vehicle and paying $6500 for a longer warranty. the probability of having to pay $6500 in the next 3 years to fix either 4runner is very low outside of wear and tear parts
25k miles is nothing on any vehicle these days, even the worst brands can last 100k miles usually pretty trouble free. is an extra warranty and perhaps some extra features worth $6500. that is basically what the dealer is trying to sell you. you also don't know what you don't know, you could get a lemon with the '24, unlikely but possible

Used vehicle prices are dropping steadily.
LED headlights are nice, but you can upgrade the 2020 with LASFITS for $260. I've run the LASFITS side-by-side with the 2023 ORP and the LASFITS are brighter. Plus you don't have to deal with the auto high beams.
The heated steering wheel is a big yawner. My wife likes it. Makes no difference for me, even in Montana winters.

The dealerships love these 'deals' so much because they are taking you for a ride.
This is such a bonehead move, don't do it.
The TSS and other nanny shit is just something else to go wrong. Don't pretend a 4runner is some luxury vehicle because of the price. It isn't.

Can you elaborate on why they are taking someone for a "ride"? What angle are they getting that is bad here?
From my perspective, I would totally do this deal. I look at total cost of ownership. We're talking about $6500 + tax, title license / 4 years. that's less than $200/month for your 2020. Then I get to reset to a new car with full warranty? If someone asked if you could have a brand new car for less than $200/mo for four years, wouldn't that be a steal?
I did exactly this from a 2019 to a 2021 but the numbers weren't this good. Curious if I missed something when I did it.

Dealer called me and since it's getting close to the end of the month they reduced price another $500 and are throwing in running boards. Looks like it's a 2024 for me.What am I getting ? Reset on the warranty, heated steering wheel, dash cam,
OR premium Plus package that includes four cameras and display monitor, LED headlights, high performance LED Fog lights. Moving up four year newer vehicle with 10 miles on the odo, other than that vehicle is the same. No payments, I'm cutting them a check for $7K out the door for everything. This 4R has KDSS and a sunroof like my 2020.

Your OP said $6,500, shouldn't this latest deal be $500 lower than that? Dealer shenanigans?
I've heard really mediocre things about that MTM camera package. I'm also personally not a fan of KDSS (particularly outside of warranty!).
Enjoy your latest 4Runner!

I added running boards and pushed the price up a bit, my friend that works for Toyota as a technical advisor for the past 30 years told me the biggest issue with KDSS is when people start adding lift kits causes the geometry to change and then failure. Said if you want to lift the 4R then get one without KDSS. I really like how KDSS takes out the body roll going around turns, also sway bars and other components are beefier.I had a SR5 before going with a ORP W/KDSS and it's night and day difference. And yes the camera resolution does suck on the 2024
but I really like the LED headlights and fog lights.
