Mattress for back of the 4r. Any good recommendations.
Im going to mammoth to camp. going to sleep in the back of the 4r. I just got an inflatable one from Amazon. But this one didnt quite fit. Was a little too long to shut door. And the figure “T” didn’t fit that good as well. Any suggestions? Thanks

I had this one. Seemed ideal as it was slightly padded over the wheel wells and was flush with the back bottom seats when they were unfolded. I’m 6’3 and my wife, young son and myself had plenty of room and it was comfortable. A little high relative to the ceiling, but not bad. The second night it popped. Couldn’t find the leak and that’s when I said no more air mattress.

I use this one that fit between the fender wells and is a fair width for two people. Takes up room though in the stow, rolled up position, but depends on how many people and how much stuff you’re taking. If you’re over 6’ you will probably have to temporarily remove the rear seat bottoms. Get the twin, 75x38x3. I think a 4” thickness would be better.

You're 6'3" and you fit in the back of the T4R? Did you have to sleep diagonal?

With the first thick air mattress I had, the height of the mattress was even with the height of the rear seat bottoms unfolded forward. Laying the pillow on top of the mattress and the unfolded seat bottom, which were level, it was plenty of room. I think it measures close to 78”, IIRC. Without, and the thinner mattress, you have to remove the rear seat bottoms and add some fillers to raise that void up to the necessary height of the mattress to get that 78” in overall length.

I have one from Deepsleep Overland. Custom fit for the 4Runner and it’s the best sleep I’ve ever had camping!

Solo sleeping
My daily driver becomes my camper by taking my compact garage stored cot, sleeping pads, DIY tarp, pottybucket, stove, ice chests.
The Teton camp cot fits from tailgate to back of passenger front seat ( seat partway forward).
I also have DIY screens for rear doors.
Sleeping bags depend upon season. Sometimes snow overnight gets into teens at altitude in Sierras. Pottybucket is more for emergency use, but plastic urinals with screw on cap are very useful. The drivers side 2nd row seat stays up and provides a good chair for changing clothing, reading etc. I just roll onto cot for sleeping.

+1 for the deepsleep! Best mattress system for the 4Runner!
My only problem is my stupid third row slants up so I have to get the back off the ground super high to get level.

Latex mattress topper, 2" or 3" thick. Cut it to whatever size and shape you need. If you cut it rectangular, there are companies online that will make a custom cushion cover for it, pretty inexpensively, using outdoor fabric that is resistant to UV, water, mold & mildew.

I never thought about using a cot. I don't have a roof rack and I was trying to science out where I would my stuff if I used a mattress. But you can just slide it under the cot.

I got an 8" full size memory foam mattress off amazon. Made a template of the wheel wells, took off outer and inner cover. Traced the template onto foam. Cut out about a 4" by 14" by 8" rectangle chunk of foam from each side with a scalpel. Then put the covers back on. This worked great for me. I initially thought 8" might be too big or small but in my rig with the slide out tray in rear storage compartment it brings the top of the mattress level with wheel wells so you still have access to the trays for your phone, flashlight etc. It fits basically door to door between the rear doors. I slide the front seats forward for head room and it hits perfectly on the rear hatch and on the back of center console.
It's light enough that I can carry it out and set it up my self. I just throw a tarp over it and load rest of camping/surf gear on top of it.
The bonus is we needed a new mattress for our spare bedroom. I just unzip the outer cover and tuck the blocks I cut out back in their slots then zip up the cover. It's essentially unnoticeable when in the cover and with a fitted sheet on and on the box spring. Quick and easy to pull when it's time for a camp excursion.
Never slept better in the truck and my wife is now way more excited to go camping than when we were doubling up on an air mattress that fit between wheel wells.
This is the one.

What cot is that and does it lay flat?
