Question Ignition Key Alarm

2017 SR5

Is thre a way to add the ignition key removal alarm if I do not have one? This is the beeping that comes on when the key is in off position reminding the driver to remove it and do not leave the car. My 4runner does not have one and it bothers me a little when it seems to be a simple item they left out that I find in much older cars. Am I able to add this or should I just drop it? Thanks.

It alarms when the driver's door is open and the key is left in the ignition, not just when you turn the car off. It should be there. To test, open the door, then insert the key; it should alarm.

I don't see anything in the settings to turn if off. It it doesn't work, something is wrong.

Some cars (not sure if Toyota does this) will lock the doors if the key is left in the ignition for a period of time - running or not - to prevent theft. This happened to a friend with a rental. She started the car and got out to clear snow from the windshield. After a minute or two, the vehicle locked itself.

Also, I have a 2000 Tundra that occasionally locks or unlocks itself whenever it feels like it! Since it's 24 years old, I just carry an extra key!

The key reminder chime might be programmable on or off via techstream. Dealer should know.

Toyotas do not do that. But if you unlock the door with the key, then never open a door, the car will assume it may be a stray signal, and then relock the doors after a couple minutes.

Most things that can be programmed by Techstream are shown in the owners manual under "Customizable Features". My '18 owners manual does not show that capability.

You can buy aftermarket kits that you can install. These kits usually come with a small speaker and wiring that connect to your ignition switch.
Or, maybe, check with your local dealership for an original Toyota part or accessory designed for this purpose. Just a thought.
