Tires for TRD Pro, brand questions

It’s time to replace my stock Nittos on mybTRD-Pro @ 52K miles.

I drive off road everyday, 3 miles each way of Florida washboard road when it’s dry and sloppy mud and clay when it rains.

We put a set of Falken Wildpeak A/T3W’s on my wife’s SR5 4WD and I really like those but they discontinued them and I can’t find a metric set anywhere, only LT’s. The AT3’s really shed the mud & stones. For whatever reason her T4R is always cleaner and mine will have an inch of mud caked up in the wheel wells & rock sliders. The new A/T4W model has stiffer sidewalls which means it will be a rougher ride like LT’s and on washboard roads stiff tires will create more rattles than you can stand. And they apparently did away with the rock ejectors in the tread.

So I’m looking at the Nitto G2’s, and the Toyo Open Country. I really would like a tire that sheds rock & mud better. I read a review that said the Toyo’s were louder than other tires and I’d like to avoid any more added roar.
So I’m looking for input, suggestions & feedback on good dual purpose AT tires. Stock size 265/70R17. I do pull a utility trailer on occasion.

Anyone know what tire comes stock on the current TRD-Pro model?

I have the BFG KO2 tires, and to me, they ride the same as the OEM Dunlops that came on my 4Runner. Yes, they are an LT tire, but if ride is what you want, then that is my assessment. The KO2 tires have an open tread that should shed rocks well.

If you are set on not having an LT tire, how about the BFG Trail Terrain T/A? BFG tires are made by Michelin (I've been a fan of Michelin for many years).

Personal opinion... I would avoid the Toyo's. I had both the AT2 and AT3's on my Tacoma over the years and neither were very good in the wet. Even the slightest acceleration and they would slip even with weight in the back.

Just got my 4Runner so I won't be ready for tires quite yet but when I am I'm going with the Wildpeak AT4W. They're supposed to be different than the AT3W in terms of tread pattern and such but just as good. Looks like Wildpeak may be discontinuing the AT3W from what I saw on Discount Tire.

Although this is just an opinion, it seems i am the only one on this forum that ever mentions the General AT/X tires. They are absolutely wonderful, i have had 7 sets on different vehicles, i am almost to 500,000 combined miles on all the sets (typically sell vehicle before tires worn out) and my current daily driver is a 4th gen with a set of 285/60-18 General AT/X and i have 101,600 miles on them and i will guarantee they will get to 125,000 miles.
They ride absolutely amazing, i run gravel, mud, dirt, climb hills, roads, highway from coast to coast non stop, i have driven from Ensenada to LaPaz (absoulutely the worst road imaginable) and never had a minutes trouble.
Out of my 7 sets
2014 Ram 3500 dually - dedicated trailer pulling truck (65,000 miles and sold with tread left)
2008 Tacoma 4door S/C (60,000+ miles and sold half tread)
2012 4runner (only drove like maybe 60,000 and traded in with half tread)
2017 Ram 2500 - dedicated trailer pulling truck (somewhere around 70,000 miles and were well worn but could have easily gotten 20,000 more unloaded miles)
2008 4runner (current daily, have 101,000+ on them)
2005 Tundra double cab (current trailer puller only have about 10,000 on them)
2023 4Runner (wifes daily, only has 9,000 on them.

Out of all those miles, literally hauling race trailer coast to coast with the two diesels, tacoma and 4runner have been all over Baja peninsula, one time pulled trailer from San Diego to Miami non stop over 2 days of driving, then turned around and came home to mississippi. My wife was driving my 4runner a year or two ago and got a nail in the tire and drove my 4runner on a flat for who knows how long till someone stopped her and told her the tire was flat, i aired the tire up and drove it to the shop and plugged the hole and its still driving today. I have only had to put a spare on the ground 1 time out of all those miles combined across all those vehicles and that was from a nail. These tires have insane puncture resistance, people with cheap tires are always getting flats fixed from rocks and nails and i NEVER have to get tires patched. My 100,000 mile Generals on my current daily have only been balanced twice and rotated twice after balancing. They ride smooth, hold a balance well, and last forever. I took this picture a couple weeks ago when i hit 100,000 on these.
They do great in the snow and sleet and have gotten me to work, up hills, and across the country pulling a race trailer in ice storms, they do great in the rain, they wear like iron, and they look good. These by far get my vote over anything else on the market.

Neither the KO2, nor any other tire with that type of thread will shed rocks or mud well.

Look at P-metric Mickey Thompson Baja Boss. The thread is killer.

It is literally the only choice in P metric that I can think of. You will have to verify that the thread is the same as on the LT, I think it is.

What about the Duratrac RT? I'm loving mine and have no regrets dropping to an XL rated tire after running a couple of E-rated sets after about 5K miles of use. Holding up well and have been great in rain, snow and offroad.

Any feedback on the Nitto Ridge Grappler? They look like they might do well with shedding the gravel & mud but might be loud? Treadwear isn’t as good as the others.

I’ll look into all the other suggestions posted, thanks for the feedback.

I have the Ridge grapplers and they’re probably noisy, but I never cared. Combined with my Elka suspension upgrade they have worked well for 8k miles so far. Only issue is city hills are a bit goofy when wet. From a stop, you can spin a bit. My only gripe. Tried to upload a picture but couldn’t.

I run ridge grapplers right now in the 255/80 17 and love them, have been to Montana, Colorado, and Moab with this set, and just got back from Gilbert offroad park in northern MN and they are still doing great. They are pretty loud now on the pavement, but no louder than my last set of KO2's after they had a little bit of wear on them. My buddy has the trail grappler on his bronco, and I think I will be going with those next, probably gonna do a little work and go to a 35 for the next set. Toyo has some interesting offerings to, and also looking at the Kenda klever rt because you can get those in a 35 that is only 10.5 wide. But the Ridge Grappler is a good tire, good performance on the road in the wet, better than the ko2 after a little bit of wear, and good in the snow to, also better than the ko2 after a little bit of wear.

I'd have to go dig up the thread, but Ridge Grapplers were always known for chunking, especially when running them in places like Arizona and Colorado where you can encounter a lot of jagged and sharp rock. I also never liked the fact that they were not 3PMS and had a mediocre snow reputation.

They were one of the original RT tires out on the market and my guess is Nitto may update them at some point (albeit, they've been very slow to make any changes to their base line).

For the record, I did run both an Exo Grappler and before that, a Trail Grappler on my Jeep and generally liked both of them.

We have a 2023 ORP with the stock Dunlops and a 2014 SR5 with Cooper Discoverer AT3 in LT. There is no discernible difference in ride. However Cooper LTs are at 50K miles and they will easily go 70K if not 80K miles. The Dunlops will be lucky to make it to 50K.
