HI All,

I have a 1999 4WD Ltd with 250,000 miles that is still doing great. I'm interested in selling it and getting a 2024 4WD Ltd to freshen up my stable. I'd rather wait a while longer, but the 6th gen is going to be a greater departure than what I have than I'm looking for, so 2024 seems to be my year to move on. V6 -> V6. 4spd auto -> 5spd auto.

My biggest reason for this choice is the center differential. I'm surprised it isn't available on more models. I like being able to go easily back and forth from dry pavement to deep sand/mud/snow, etc. What also surprises me is there is no longer 2WD as a selection. Running the front axle on the interstate in the summer surely impacts fuel mileage and incurs more wear and tear on the front drive train. Looks like the 2024 will get about the same fuel mileage as my 1999. That isn't much of a negative for me.

Positives? It's a Limited! So it comes with all sorts of luxury features.The only option I see as a must have is the cargo cover.

My plan is to get one in Florida-friendly colors; white or grey exterior with beige interior. Not my favorite colors, but *sigh* I spend time in Florida summers.

Currently the dealers appear to have only models with a lot of undesirable options. Eg the clear film on doors and hood that mold around the edges after a few years. Or $700 for two oil changes. (I rotate tires myself when I check the brakes.)

Any thoughts how difficult it will be to get a 2024 4WD Ltd _without_ the stuff I don't want? Some of it, even if they tossed it in for free I'd rather not have. I'm looking for an upgrade I'll be happy that I did, 10-20 years from now.

I just bought a 24 Limited. I wanted automatic running boards for the wife and it had to be either red or underground. It was getting much harder to find one with the options I wanted so when one came up 200 miles away I jumped on it. I imagine as production comes to an end it will be even more hard to find what you want. I still have my 14 Limited and wanted to grab another one since the 14 has been so good. All that film, tint etc seems to be pretty standard dealer add ons around here. They seem to put it on as soon as the car hits the lot. I do not like it but try to negotiate the price of them off.

I spoke to a salesman about the film, mentioning my neighbor has mold growing under the edge of the film on his white Tundra, and it's ugly. The sales guy said you're supposed to remove the film after a while. My response was no one told my neighbor to do that.

If that's the case, they can go ahead and remove it now. :-)

You may want to search wider for more reasonable dealers. It should not be difficult at this point to find a 2024 without dealer crap added on. Plenty of people have been buying below MSRP for many months now. However, hurry, because production will end in the next six months or so.

I was in a similar situation. I had a '99 Limited with that fancy transfer case that could do it all: 2hi, 4hi full-time, 4hi part-time (locked center differential), 4lo. And I also had the rear diff lock. I got rid of it last year for my 2023 Offroad Premium; so I chose prioritizing the rear diff lock over the full-time 4WD. The full-time 4WD of the Limited must affect MPG, but perhaps not substantially so, as Limiteds, Offroads, 2WD's, all current 5th gens have identical EPA MPG ratings of 16/19/17mpg. If you want a Limited, just buy it; I guarantee it'll do better on MPG than the '99, especially if you keep your foot out of it and don't cruise 80mph on the interstate. I have never, ever seen a highway drive below 22mpg in my 2023. Full-time 4WD is great to have, especially in the repeated snow/no snow road situation you describe.

I would say extra wear and tear is not a problem running the front diff. There's tons of 5th gens over 250k miles, all trim levels. If anything, the Automatic Differential Disconnect and 4WD actuators of the non-Limiteds are probably more likely future failure points than the Limited running all the front equipment all the time. I've never heard of a Limited 5th gen wearing out the front drive components. I have heard of plenty of ADD units or 4WD actuators failing on non-Limiteds, but I also wouldn't worry about it either way.

We bought a 2023 ORP last year and simply waited until the right vehicle color, without KDSS and moon roof, arrived. We had no interest in a 4-cylinder turbo engine, especially since our 2014 has 360K miles and showing no mechanical problems, though just started leaking from the rear main seal.

I'm definitely looking for the tried and true V6. I tend to keep vehicles for a long time, so prefer to buy something with the bugs worked out, and plenty of experience from other owners available online for when there's an issue.

I see the Ltd 4wd comes with 20" wheels. Aside from the extra expense for replacement tires, the 20" wheels are more appropriate for posing at the grocery store, than cruising down a rock riddled forestry road.

I see 17" wheels in my future.

Limiteds really are a luxury urban version of the 4Runner. Great for soccer moms and grocery hauling. Used ones have lower resale value than other versions of the 4Runner as there is less demand for them and many competing crossover SUVs that get higher mileage.

It sucks that the great optional full-time 4WD transfer case in the 5th gen was only for Limited trims on hyper urbanite wheels. Would've been cool for them to offer it as a paid option on other trims.

The reason I'm looking at the Limited is the center differential, which for my circumstances I've found beneficial. For instance, my 88 Suburban had traditional 4WD with a factory inertial rear locker. That locker was known for grenading when transitioning from ice to dry pavement, a common occurrence in my Raleigh, NC winters.

I wish it was an option on a more mundane model.

A vehicle that's 25 years old and runs great is something I would keep. I don't see how you can avoid getting screwed on a trade in. I guess you could sell it privately though. We have a 2000 Tundra - and the plan is to keep it as long as it continues to run great. As far as a new vehicle goes, I'd have to study up on the post covid buying process; as a lot has changed and dealers are trying to make up their losses from that time.

My plan was to keep the 99 for another 5 years or so. Then I saw that the 2024 is the last year to get a 5th gen. I don't like where federal regulations are taking the latest designs, so now seems better than later to get a new 4Runner. Much as I'd like to keep my 99, being single with two 4Runners doesn't make much sense. I live in Florida, where car insurance is 2nd highest in the nation. There isn't much of a discount on multiple vehicles, so the 99 must go after I get a 24.

I haven't traded in a vehicle in my entire life. :-) I always get thousands more via private sale.

Just don't do trade in. At least in my area of Utah, people fight viciously over any used 4Runners, including third gens. I sold my denty 210k mile third gen, which had issues here and there, for over $4,000 last year, in less than 24 hours.

Full time transfer case, memory seat and radar sensers are the only reasons I only consider Limiteds.
