Bigger muffler or add a resonator

I've got 60k miles on my '21 TRD Pro and yeah... the exhaust is annoying as hell. Can barely have a conversation with a passenger while on the highway. Toyota designers are not winning any points with this monstrosity.

Can just the muffler be swapped with the normal 4Runner muffler and retain the look of the Pro? Seems like it would just be a flange to flange swap?
I have 45K on mine and it’s very annoying for sure.

The flanges for the mid-section are different between the normal exhaust and the trd pro catback exhaust. The normal one is a 2 hole design and the trd pro is a three hole design. There is no plug and play solution for it that I have ever found. Basically your option is to replace it with another exhaust that has the proper 3 hole mid-section, which is usually some sort of other brand of performance exhaust, or have a muffler shop cut off one flange and weld on the proper one. The muffler shop option would probably be the least expensive option especially if you can find a used OEM exhaust someone wants to get rid of.

I put a magnaflow overland on my pro. Got it for a couple hundred off retail, had one on a previous orp. It’s definitely got some noise, but it’s not a drone. Arguing about trim levels is a little childish. Get what you like, and be happy for others choices too. We’re all a 4runner family folks.

That’s unfortunate that it’s not just a plug and play with the normal 4R muffler. Exhaust shop by me says they can do one that drops right in made by Walker? I don’t know much about them and I’m just worried that it won’t solve my problem. Flip side is, I would prefer not to have anything cut up if I don’t have to.

After looking at it again, I think the flanges should still fit on the cat side, so yes they should have a drop in that will work on the cat side. The 3 hole flange is on the midpipe, so they should be able to just weld a 2 hole flange on the tailpipe if you want to keep your tailpipe with the chrome tip, which is no big deal. As far as solving your problem if drone, yes, a Walker Quiet Flow will be quiet and not sound anything like the TRD exhaust. We just put one of these on my son's 2003 Xterra and it is quiet. They are cheap and my not last the longest, but they are serviceable and work.

This was my solution... The drone was just too much for me. Took off the TRD Pro exhaust and put on the OEM.
You will also need the tail pipe to muffler gasket since the TRD Pro exhaust does not use it. Optionally, I also got the gasket donut gasket for the front part of the muffler. The spring bolts connecting the muffler are re-used.
Non TRD Pro Exhaust #: 17420-31360
Non TRD tail pipe #: 17430-31870
Gasket for the front of the muffler: 90917-A6001 (you might be able to use existing)
Gasket for tail pipe to muffler: 17451-31020 (you need this since the TRD Pro exhaust does not have this)
Unfortunately, I do not have the part #s for the two bolts for the tail pipe assembly to the muffler. The TRD Pro exhaust uses 3 bolts compared to the non TRD Pro tail pipe.
Currently I have it listed on Craigslist for 250 bucks...

Appreciate the help. That seems to be the best solution at the moment.

Had a drone issue on my Lexus when I customized the exhaust. I installed a J-pipe. The length can be adjusted depending on what RPM the drone is.

I always wanted a 4runner so I bought a 2023 TRD Pro last year before they redesigned it. I wanted the 4 liter, etc. Anyway, we took it on a couple of road trips and HATED the catback exhaust drone. We are in our early 50's, so maybe we are just too old for it, but it drove us absolutely nuts at interstate speeds and rpms. It gave us a headache and we could not even hold a conversation. We loved everything else about the truck though. I finally had enough and at 5000 miles I put on a Magnaflow Overland exhaust. I went with it because it came with a resonator that you could install specifically to get rid of drone at highway speeds and the install is pathetically easy. We are at 15k now and far more satisfied with it than the TRD catback. The drone is gone and it still sounds good. Plus I have more clearance. Sold my OEM TRD exhaust in just a few days on FB market place for almost what the new Magnaflow cost, so all I was out was about $75 and the time it took for me to install it, which was about an hour. I think they have went up in price though now because they have gotten more popular. I bought mine for less than $700 and sold my OEM for just a little over $600. Some people really want that OEM with the black chrome tip.

Just got a ‘24 Trd Pro and I’m reading your post and saying holy cow that’s exactly what I was going to post. That exhaust literally gives me headaches on the highway. I love the truck but I’m going to have to replace the exhaust or else I will lose my mind. Is there a specific model for the overland exhaust you mention? Or is it just one that fits our truck? Thanks!

Respectfully, I'm not sure how valuable that anecdote is on a thread where 10 other PRO owners ARE bothered by it, and therefore came here to talk about any potential ways they can mitigate it. Your testimony won't result in them suddenly being ok with it.
Maybe living in flatland at sea level has something to do with it. Here in high altitude and mountain land, these engines will rev a lot more, and I'm sure it's more annoying at 3500RPM than 2000RPM.

It is make and model specific to 5th gens. Go to their website and search your make and model and it will give you the model number for ordering.
