I bought my wife a 2023 ORP to get one of the last 4.0L V6 4Runners due to their proven reliability. Due to the miles on the 2014, it has been taken off the long distance driving list and relegated to local, winter and off-road driving.
The engine in the 2014 is showing no issues. I fully expect it to easily go 500K. As noted the transmission is showing signs of going out. Confirmed this with my local mechanic. Today I picked up a takeout A750F transmission with 43K miles for $800. Seller had it listed for $942 on eBay and accepted my offer of $800. Also a provided free shipping from Spokane to Missoula.
Transmission was salvaged from a wrecked 2016 4Runner. Figured they couldn’t F up a trans that hadn’t even reached its first fluid change. I have new pan seal and filter/strainer and new rear engine seal, plus front pump and rear output seals are on order.
I threw the transmission in the back of the 2014 and drove it straight to my local mechanic for install. I would do this job, but I’m out of time on this segment at the Montana home and head back down to SoCal starting Friday afternoon and back in the LA office Monday.
