Here's the question: The vehicle is a Limited with the full-time 4WD electronic shift. If I can find a used transfer case what years will work? Is it only the 5th gen, or do earlier ones fit?. The parts search engine keeps pulling back cases from 2003-2010.

Is that the shift motor, sometimes called encoder motor? Actuator is typically on the front axle and locks the axle.
Found listing for the shift motor (they also call it actuator) on RockAuto.com. The interesting part is that the Aisin version is cheaper, by a large margin:
