4runner hit while parked, thoughts on damage + additional work.
There’s paint damage the entire length of the drivers side.
Both doors are creased in, and the front bumper mounts broke.
The factory running board was bent down, but it appears that the frame is OK.
Driver’s front wheel is gouged terribly.
The car was shoved into the curb, but I’m not observing any obvious suspension damage (haven’t driven it yet.)
It’s a 2014 with 112,000 miles so I’m really, really hoping they don’t total it. This 4runner is by far the best vehicle I’ve owned. I’m feeling really guilty about this because I bought a second car and started street parking the 4runner so I didn’t have move it every time i wanted to take the other car out.
After researching shops, I’m going to use the insurance’s recommended shop. My insurance uses OEM parts if possible, unless that policy has changed.
Since the car needs paint, I’m tempted to have the roof done. Originally I was going to just use color PPF (see fender stripe tests) but this event changes things, maybe. Perhaps its worth it to have them address the roof?
The clear coat on the roof has fully failed, and the rear spoiler has deformed. This isn’t related to the accident. What has been your experience having body shops tack on additional out-of-pocket work while doing an insurance claim?
Also, I have been on the fence about real rock sliders. I don’t off-road, but I can’t help but wonder if actual rock sliders would have prevented a lot of this damage. Given how the factory running boards were bent down, maybe the damage would have just been on the offending car?
And, of course, it was a hit and run.

If you decide to part it out, I’ll take the hood for $200. It will save me a paint job on the other hood I have.

It looks mostly cosmetic, it probably won't be totaled. I had my beloved V6 manual Accord rear ended last year, the bumper cover, bumper, trunk and driver side rear quarter were all damaged, and the insurance had it repaired.
I asked about having other work done - the hood needed a repaint, rock chips and such - but they refused. I think you will have the same response, my impression was that the shops that do insurance work won't do anything but the contracted work, but you can always ask.
Good rock sliders might have saved some of the damage, hard to be sure - but I do want some for the same reason. Just need to convince the wife I >>NEED<< to spend more money on car parts.

The fixed running boards are attached by a couple of bolts on each end. You should be able to easily remove and straighten or replace the front and rear brackets if you want.

Looks like a "buff" it out job, you're good, not getting totalled.

$3000-$5000 worth of damage. Far from totaled. Sorry that happened though

I had the factory running boards but hated the look. I got it lifted on day one and had rock sliders also installed. I think my rock sliders have saved me a lot of door dings for sure and other possible cosmetic damage. 2012 SR5 absolutely pristine condition. never selling this rig.

initial estimate was 8K and somehow it’s creeped up to 12 K nearly 13 K. now I’m thinking the body shop wants it totaled
