Question P0705 Range Sensor - Neutral Start

2017 4runner 26909mi

Code: P0705
Range Sensor - Neutral Start

Toyota part number: 84540-35060

Is the DYI fairly simple? I do not have a lift. I cannot find any specific videos/tutorials that I can follow. The ones I have seen were not that great and each one had difficulty getting the old one out.

Any advice?

Your part link showed a neutral back-up safety switch. They are not hard to remove and install. Looks like one bolt and it slides off the shift shaft.

first use wire brush and clean rust from shaft. then spray with penetrating fluid.
if it is not sliding out easy, carefully cut slot in it with tool not very powerful tool
and open it up with flat screwdriver. no force applied here. remember if you damage shaft, transmission is gone. use plenty of grease on assembly and dielectric grease on wire plug. wires corrosion also very common.

Found two videos on removing the neutral back-up safety switch. In both cases, they had to pry it off, basically mangling the old switch. One guy broke the inner sleeve up using a chisel and hammer, then hit the shaft with a welding torch. Not so sure I would do that as it would compromise any seal on the shaft. In both cases it was corroded onto the shaft. So soaking it with penetrating oil is a good idea.

Once the switch comes off, the new one goes on rather easy. Slide it over the shaft, then tighten the bolt.

Look up a post by Jeremy556 on 3/16/21 on the neutral safety sw. He has pics, part # and description on how to remove the connector and change out the sw. You can also search on neutral safety sw. There are a couple of threads on this subject. Cars from the North and East seem to hav this issue due to Winter salt used on the roads.

Yes it would help I think. There is a thread where the switch was removed and taken apart, cleaned and resealed while waiting for a new part. Turns out these switches are not sealed or protected very well - hence all these failures.
