2018 4Runner MGM roof paint failing

The paint on the roof of my '18 is failing. For context, I live in Florida and my 4R is parked outside so it gets a lot of sun, but I try to wax at least twice a year. Noticed the paint while I was putting my cargo carrier up on the roof rack for a recent road trip. The paint under the cross bars still looks to be in good condition. I've seen threads about issues with the white paint, but this is pretty disappointing for a car that's just 6 years old. I know, the quality of the paints isn't as good these days and I should be happy I even got 6 years out of it. On the plus side it's just the roof, the hood and other panels look like new. Most likely I'll get one of the 3 stage paint kits and tackle it myself when the time comes. Anyone else having this problem?

It looks like a failure from the factory paint process. Have a paint shop investigate for you and go from there. I’d think it would still under warranty.

Looks like initial stages of delamination of the clear top coat. The striations in the film will eventually rupture causing delamination from the base coat. This coating is not fixable with that amount of cracking in it.

Likely the result of an improperly qualified new supplier in a enviro friendly low voc junk paint.. give me lead... give me cadmium..give me chrome.. solvent based please...with heavy metals. The greeny shit is just that..shit.

Often times OEMs based coating choices on accelerated weathering type lab testings for qualification processes, perhaps a weatherometer for SAE J2527 or similar accelerated xenon arc testing and or with cyclic corrosion component in addition for even more aggressive testing. Problem with this is there is no actual correlation between accelerated and real world exposure, to many variables including regional disparities in industrial pollution and or UV exposure/intensity.

See if Toyota will help pay or it. Or strip it and paint a clean on it again. Although I would be abit leery on the base coat as to how damaged it is as well. Likely they are comparable systems. Likely has base type primer, pearl type coating in grey with high gloss low VOC clear on top..

Sorry about your roof. Even if you are past warranty, I would get this to dealer and see what they say.
