Ultimate camping mod- rear window up / down and hatch pop with ignition off!

4th and 5th Gen ULTIMATE CAMPING MOD!

Several years ago I got sick of having to crawl up to the front, put the key in the ignition and roll the rear window up or down to regulate heat while camping in my 4R, so I developed a kit that allows you to roll the rear window up and down with the ignition off as well as pop the rear hatch while camping. The newest wireless kits offer two safety features: 1) they require you press button D along with the intended actuation button. In other words, If I want the window to go up, I hold button D and button A. This is a safety lock to prevent mis actuation and 2) I now have an on / off switch that is included. This turns the kit on / off and can either be installed by drilling a hole in your back panel (no wires to run) or just tuck it behind the rear hatch access panel.

Style 1- Wireless - $150 shipped

The wireless kit is the easiest to install- most likely you will finish in half an hour. Includes weatherproof electronics enclosure, 2 remote fobs, zip ties, taps, a few extra panel clips in case you damage yours taking the back panel off and very detailed instructions

Style 2- Wired hard mounted switches – $80 shipped

The wired hard mounted switch kits allow you to install the switch / button where you want. Install is an hour or two. Includes everything required to install (harnesses, switches, taps, zip ties, spare clips and full detailed instructions).

*Note, kits supplied with a slightly different wire than shown. I switched to a smaller wire for easier installation*

Note the red button shown in picture is no longer included. I now ship with a black flush mount (below). I have also done kits where the install is 3 of these - one for up, one for down and one for pop. This is a great solution for mounting all switches on the rear door panel.

Style 3- Hobby box - $100-150 shipped
If you’d like a physical button but don’t want to drill into your panels or have switches exposed, I offer hobby boxes with the switches installed. These vary in price depending on what you want, and can be anywhere from $100-$150 shipped. Below are a few examples, but message for more details.

FAQ

1. What years is this designed for?
All 4th and 5th gen 4runners. Note for 2010+ limited along with 2020+ with smart key, I have two different wiring options in the instructions (same kit covers both). You can either A) have a full functionality system but keys need to be outside vehicle (typically in a lock box below) OR partial functionality where you can keep keys inside and operate window up / down as well as pop the hatch BUT the kit will not lock / unlock - instead you'd have to use your key fob.

2. What does each button do?
Tapping the two way switch down unlocks the vehicle, holding it down for 2 seconds begins to roll the rear window down. Tapping up locks, and holding up starts to bring the window up.
The red button pops the rear hatch when the vehicle is unlocked.

3. I have a dog and am worried about him opening the back while driving. What can be done?
Luckily the system only works when the vehicle is locked. Once you start moving, the vehicle will lock, and the button will become useless. Luckily as noted above, while camping in the back you are able to lock and unlock the vehicle.

4. What is the install like?
Installation should be about an hour and requires no soldering or wire crimping. You have to remove some panels (I include instructions on how to do so), tap into 3 wires (I include 3M vampire taps and full schematics) as well as install the switches. I’d guess 5% of customers ask questions on the installation, but I have never had anyone say they couldn’t do it.

5. I want something custom, do you do that?
Yes, happy to do custom jobs. Just let me know what you are thinking

6. How do I pay?
a. Please email me at [email protected] for ordering information[/U][/I].

7. Further Questions?
Email me at [email protected] – I will usually respond within a day or less.

(video is from a 4th gen, operation is identical)

I had to buy extra material when making the first kit, so I decided to put a few kits together and sell them. The reception was great on the kits, so I decided to market some more kits.

Kits include:

Harness A
Harness B
(pre terminated connectors on each harness)
Up-Down DPDT Switch
Momentary SPST Button
6 zip ties
2 spare Toyota panel clips (just in case you damage yours when removing rear door panel)
1 spare Toyota interior trim clip (not shown; these are the pink compression clips) for 4th gens
Full instructions

*Note, kits supplied with a slightly different wire than shown. I switched to a smaller wire for easier installation*

Installation shouldn't take more than an hour and there is no soldering. Very simple. I have a 10+ page PDF install specific to 4th gen and 5th gen installs with pictures and wiring charts.

Price is $50 shipped, and I have these harnesses built up and ready to go. Let me know if interested- [email protected]
I love this.

Are we still talking about trucks?

I feel like this is a great kit for non-limited’s, even when I sleep I feel hitting the button for the LE covers it.

Some people have entire build threads with how to tutorials as a way of giving to the community. Others spend their time creating custom badges to share with the community.

And then some do whatever to make a buck.

Feel free to post the instructions for others to piece their own together.

Or dont. Wutever.

Bit harsh, eh?

OP spent time figuring out how to do this, has assembled all the parts, and is willing to sell what amounts to a plug-and-play kit. I'm pretty sure most forum members (myself included), couldn't have figured this out on our own.

Nothing wrong with a little entrepreneurship.

Apparently you haven't read many people's threads on here... especially Antman's. There are a lot of us who have spent a lot of time documenting mods with detailed instructions and pictures.

The OP is selling about $5 worth of material for $50.

Just because someone does it and shares that it can be done doesn't obligate them to give it away for free. I'm glad so many members of the community share helpful mods, but I won't begrudge someone looking to make money off of theirs. If it's popular enough, someone will open-source it eventually anyway.

"Us"???? Where is your contribution to "us"? I couldn't find any. From some of the questions you've posted, you'd be the perfect candidate for a "kit".

@OP This is a good idea, and if I camped I wouldn't think twice about spending $50 (shipped) for it.

Bonus: An attaboy from The Ultimate Camper @Titanpat57

Let's see here:

$50
-$12 materials, easily.
-$8 packaging and shipping, easily.
=$30 for getting all the stuff, putting it all together properly, and hauling it to the PO. Hm, I'd say he's getting rich at the rate of $15/hr. I don't begrudge that.

i think there's value in a plug-and-play kit. what it's "worth" is up to the buyer, really.

i will submit, however, that most dog owners would appreciate, if not prefer, a recessed push-button for the hatch release...
