5th gen SR5 already in the shop
I've been stalking this forum for several months in anticipation of the 5th gen coming out. I bought a Silver SR5 last Saturday, and I'm beginning to wonder if I made the right decision.
Don't get me wrong, I love the look and feel of the truck. I didn't even notice anything wrong with it when I drove it home (I was enjoying the new speakers!). However, when my husband drove it, we noticed a winding noise coming from the front end. We took it in to the shop today, and sure enough, they told us that there's a problem with the transfer case. I don't know what the exact problem is, I just know that they won't have it fixed until next week. Not a big deal (I hope) because it's under warranty, but still...it's a brand new vehicle!
I knew it was risky to buy out of the first batch of a newly redesigned vehicle, but I did it anyways because I'm impatient.
Live and learn, I guess.

I'd be interested to find out any additional details if you have time to write back. Hopefully this is just a fluke thing.

I would NOT except that truck back...period
Demand a new vehicle, a rental, and compensation for your aggrevation, unless it's anything other than a minor(less than an hour or two) adjustment of actual shop time.

There are NO RETURNS! Your leading her down the wrong path. There is no federal or state law requiring a car dealer or a person selling a car to take a car back. When you sign the papers it's your car.......The only exceptions are certain transactions in California that are covered by the California Car Buyers Bill of Rights or where the dealer voluntarily offers to take a car back. Dealers may describe the right to cancel as a "cooling-off" period, a money-back guarantee or a "no questions asked" return policy. Before you purchase from a dealer, ask about the dealer's return policy, get it in writing in the contract and read it carefully.
Now each state has lemon laws but this hardly falls under that.....yet.
Here is a link to Marylands Lemon laws....

Well based on what the issue is I would say the truck is brand new..and would not accept anything less than new...let Toyota deal with the the issue and problems.
I'm not trying to play hard ball..but your talking big money here...not chump change. I can understand every new vehicle has some quirks and growing pains, which for the most part can be rectified by the dealer in a relatively short period...but if you think I would accept a brand new truck that needs a major component...no friggin way!! Get me a new one.
PS...I'm not suggesting that she do this...only what I would do!!

Yes. If you ever have a problem with your vehicle, you can just give it back

as far as i know, the only major car company that guarantees their car is GM...
interesting don't ya think? 60 day money back guarantee, toyota could learn something from GM atleast on the ball field regarding customer satisfaction.
with quality alternatives being offered by hyundai, honda and toyota should be doing all they can to maintain a loyal customer database and that includes satisfaction IMO.
while toyota is still in the top 10 in JD Power and Associates IQS (2009) study, they rank below hyundai and honda.
infact, hyundai ranks 4th while toyota is ranking 7th.
the only thing is that hyundai doesn't offer a body on frame construction truck or suv in north america and i dont think honda makes a body on frame suv/truck so toyota is cornering the market with nissan here.
i sure hope that the dealership fixes your car in a timely manner or even gives you a new one. i'd be real pissed if i dropped that kinda cash and ended up with a lemon. atleast an appology combined with a few free scheduled maintenances should be in order to compensate you.

It's unfortunate and annoying that there's a problem with the truck, but mistakes happen. I'm giving them a chance to fix it before I really get upset. The Maryland lemon law states that the same problem must be "repaired" 4 times before they are required to refund your money or give you a replacement vehicle. I sure hope this doesn't happen 4 times....
I'll definitely keep you all updated as I get more information on the issue. Hopefully it was just a one time deal and no one else will have the same problem.

Glad to see that you're taking a level-headed approach to this. Is the dealer providing a loaner while it's in the shop?
The only other thing to add would be to keep good documentation (i.e. the repair order, the diagnosis, timelines, etc.) regarding the problem in case you do need to pursue (knock on wood) your state's Lemon Law.
Defects do happen, even with good products and companies. Good companies will stand behind their product. Apple replaced my MacBook Pro with a brand new one (a newer model too) after a logic board failure, power management unit failure, and two display replacements.

$H!T happens. I wouldn't get too excited, yet. It will probably be the last time its in the shop for years to come. Example: in '04 I bought a new silverado. Within two weeks the front diff started to leak real bad so I took it back to the dealer who agreed with me that it was in fact leaking. That leak required the whole diff be replaced due to a bad casting. At least they took the time to actually look into the problem. However, this process took about a month due to the fact that the front diff was on backorder. Now that it is all said and done the truck has well over 100k miles on her and never a trip back to the dealer.
So, I wouldn't let this setback upset you. Now if it happens again............
