My insurance company forwards that information over to DMV automatically. I don't have to do anything on my end when I pay for registration.

I'm sharing a policy with my wife who lives across the country for several more months so I'm guessing my insurance company won't forward it to CA since the main policy holder is registered in another state.

I would think that having proof of insurance by keeping the insurance cars in the 4R should be enough.
