Buying from dealer out of state (way out of state)

Since I live in MN no dealers stock the Trail Ed. and will have to order one for me, four months . I found exactly what I want (Trail, KDSS, no nav) on a lot in Seattle WA.

Anyone have any experience buying a new car out of state? Anything I should know?

I'll be out there the end of March anyway, so I will have a chance to see it. My options would be to drive it home (1500 miles) or to have it trucked (~$800 - $1400).

Thanks in advance for any help!

Ryan, let me know when you are planning to buy...I might be able to help. I live about 30 minutes south of seattle. I know the Salsa Red trail you are talking about. I've seen the pictures, but wouldn't mind taking a look in person to check it out or feeling out that dealership for you.

I am picking up my silver trail (KDSS w/out NAV) this Saturday! When I made the deal last weekend, I was surprised to find that there were 7 other trail editions in Washington state, and 4 of them were equipped with KDSS w/out NAV.

Your dealership should be able to trade for Seattle's Trail Edition and work out the logistics, or I'd recommend shipping it on an auto transport. Intercity Lines is the most expensive, but they are the #1 auto transporter in today's economy. It would be a sweet road trip though...

Let me know!

I would go out of state in a heartbeat for the right deal.

I went out of state to get mine, paid $800 for delivery.

Well worth the wait!

BT: Thanks for the offer!

The specific one I found was at magictoyota (I'm sure there may be others). I'm looking for Mag Gray with KDSS and no nav.

One dealership I talked to here said they won't do trades outside of 250 miles. They don't want to pay for transportation/shipping costs. I have not talked to them about finding one and having me pay for the shipping.

Is any dealer able to do a US wide search for what I want? I've been googling toyota dealers and going to everyone's inventory page, very time consuming.

Thanks everyone!

I would never ship my car unless covered and direct drive (as in no reloading allowed)....

I have shipped cars three times (one of those were a move to Anchorage so kind SOL) and every single time the cars have been dented, scratched etc

Sure that could easily happen on the road, but at least then you did it

I placed a preference request at another dealer here in Seattle (TE, blue, KDSS, Nav) and was informed (today) that only 6% of the 4Runners are Trail Editions. Narrowing that down to specific option package/ext. color combinations is going to reduce that percentage even further. Fortunately, I can afford to wait, but... if there was one on the lot, matching all my choices, even all the way in Florida I would probably be buying it over the phone right now and deal with the shipping myself.

Bought in Virginia/Shipped to LA

Found exactly what I wanted. Mag Gray Trail KDSS/Nav. Liked the price. Had FedEx pick it up and bring it covered 2200+ miles. Covered transport, Arrived slightly dusty but otherwise perfect

This may seem like a silly question, but in regards to purchasing a 4runner from a nonlocal dealer, how does warranty and maintenance work? Can you take your new car to any dealer for warranty work?

I bought mine from a dealer about 4 hours away, so it isn't convenient at all to go to that dealer when I need something done.

Also, what about the customizable features, will my local toyota shop do those w/o charge, or does that just work at the dealer I purchased from?
