Crawl Control

Does your crawl control make crazy noise especially on slowest settings. Very jerky like the brakes are slammed off and on, groaning and moaning?

what is the deal?

Yup, thats how it works... weird

I saw a video a while back of the demonstrating it and the guy said it was normal for it to make all the noises..

I was also just playing around with mine

ya, I only tried it for a few seconds on a dirt road, but I don't see ever using it. it seems to effect the steering too. i was expecting it to be much smoother.

maybe the multi-terrain is more useful, i don't know yet.

rear locker is really the big plus.

I personally think crawl control is gimicky and I would rarely use it, but you have to admit it's cool. I used it a couple of times on my landcruiser to show off to buddies. I'll never forget the first time, sounds like all hell is braking loose and things are going crazy, but that is it. It's rapid braking and accelerating, doing all the work for you.

The best terrain for crawl control is going through rocks. In deep mud it's useless. I've not tried it in other terrain other than those two.

A-TRAC will also make a lot of the same noises when you are really on it and in a slippery situation. Both are good tools to be used at the right time, but horribly annoying when they kick in!

geez...i just about crapped my pants testing out crawl control for the first time.
At low speed it made this TERRIBLE noise and I was convinced it was broken, or would get broken.

Just to confirm, this is normal?

I get the same noise. Wondering the same thing. Just so I am doing this right

-Gear is not in P or N
-4L
-Brake depressed
-Crawl control on

This should be everything you need to do correct?

it should sound the same as atrac does, wich does sound troubling if you dont expect it. But its normal.

I've used Crawl Control a few times, it does make a lot of noise. On one of the vids I posted in the Vids sticky I was using it going up hill. I also had the rear locker on. Everything worked great, it does seem to quiet down a little going up hill though.

Going up hill, it doesn't have to apply the brakes as often. On that one spot I kept changing the speed as well, when it makes a lot of noise, I would increase the speed and it would start moving quicker and make less noise.

I just checked out ATRAC, and it did not make any noise....DOnt think I was doing anything wrong as it seems fairly straight forward to engage. Vehicle in 4-lo than hit the atrac button right?

He's just referring to the noise, they sound similar. A-Trac will not actually make noise until a wheel loses traction. Crawl control makes the noise because it's keeping the vehicle from moving too fast. Both essentially apply brake pressure, but for different reasons.

Whether it be stability control, traction control, A-Trac, crawl control, multi terrain select, they all essentially work by applying brake pressure to the wheels that need it. I think Crawl control will actually apply throttle as well, but the noise that's heard is from the brake system I believe. The brains behind each system basically control when to apply the brakes, how much slippage before application, etc.

Never used it but my guess is yes since all these systems use the anti-lock braking which is the source of some strange noises when it kicks in.

Crawl Control will sound like a band of gnomes going to work on your engine with a bag of hammers. Yes, it is normal. I thought I had broken something, too. It seems to even out once the vehicle is rolling along.

I think the sound is arrived because of we are using Crawl Control on pavement. I thought it was meant for offroading.
