I think they mean there is no "mechanical handle" to lift up on. The rubber pad that your fingers press on when you open the tail gate is the "electronic" part.

Well, my 2006 SE has a locking rear hatch. If you close the rear hatch lightly it will "soft close" itself with an electronic motor. I think that might be what this is talking about.

This feature was left out of the 2010.

I think you figured it out. I wonder if they left out the "soft close" all together because they will introduce a power liftgate soon. One can hope that it wasn't just to cut costs.

Yep, anyone can walk up to your 4R and open the rear hatch at anytime because it does not lock. Seriously, who needs a locking rear hatch, Toyota was very smart to leave that out don't you think, crime who cares Some people!
Yes, the 4R DOES have an electronic rear hatch locking system, hence you press a button and it sends an electrical pulse to unlock/lock the rear hatch, was that really that hard to figure out?!

'Fraid I'm with Westwind on this one, LBL.
I don't like sarcasm much on this board, but you'd-a-done the same thing methinks ... and it was a, uh, less than enlightened question.

Calling everyone here, stupid, is not very nice and seemingly more of a reflection rather than an accusation given that bumbling post.

"Electronic rear hatch locking system" is verbatim wording from the 4th gen brochure. It could be an issue of some remaining, inaccurate printed material regarding the 5th gen, or that the phrase sounds good and can be defined ad hoc just about anyway Toyota wants so why not leave it in there. Have to see what's in the 2011 brochure.

Cold it be a description of the ability to 'lock' / 'unlock' the rear hatch electronically, i.e. remotely via the key fob?
After all, the rear hatch isn't considered a door, or is it?
