Ok, the offroad conditon means the road conditon varies. Then are we sure the tire really slips when it needs to all the time? I guess the driveline binding should happen quite often when driving offroad too since no one knows what ground condtion really is when making a turn. I would think the truck should be designed to tolerate the common binding effect. Making any sense?

I think you really need to talk to your salesman or whoever gave you this bad info regarding driving in 4X4. You should NOT drive in 4X4 on pavement if you will be making turns. The tires cant slip so you wind up torqing the suspension/drivetrain. Once a month, take it on a dirt road and drive in 4X4 ....OR.... drive on a straight road on pavement. As for the ECO mode, it wont come on til you go into 2 wheel drive. Reading the manual is also very helpful. Hope this helps

Isn't a part time 4WD system generally considered beefier?

I'm thinkin' it is good to have equal torque going to front and rear wheels in off-road conditions.

Beefier? The Torsen center diff has been around for a long time and is very very reliable and will take a beating.

When the Full time Limiteds are in 4HL ,it is locked and the torque is equal going to the front and rear. The same as Part Time locked.

I dont know if it's been mentioned on this forum or not but there is a TSB out for the Part Time 4x4 in the 5th Gens.A few have on here have had the problem and is something to listen for.

Front Differential Growl/Rumble Noise (T-SB-0175-10)

Some 2010 model year part-time 4WD 4Runner vehicles may exhibit a growl or rumble noise from the front differential assembly when the vehicle is in motion in 2WD.

Beefier? Huh? The axles are the same. The driveshafts are the same. And Torsen diffs are not, in any way, weak.

When you lock the Torsen diff, it behaves exactly the same as a part-time system -- the front and rear driveshafts turn at the same speed.

The SR5 and Trail Edition part-time 4WD system is basically the same as the vast majority of part-time systems.

You are over-stressing about this. Your 4WD system will be just fine.

I'm not saying it "is", I'm saying it's "considered" simpler and stronger. That being said, I would have preferred the FJ's full time 4wd manual, what can you do? Who knows why Toyota does what they do? Cafe standards? P/T is also "considered" to have better fuel economy...

I haven't seen anything that indicates part-time is any stronger.

1) Look at the 4th gen and compare the V6 with a multi-mode (can be run in 2WD) versus the V8 with full-time. There was 1-2 mpg difference in CAFE rating.

2) Look at the 5th gen and compare the rating between the SR5/TE (part-time) versus the Limited (fulltime). The are all rated the same: 17 city, 22 highway, 19 combined.

In other words, part-time doesn't have any better economy than multi-mode or fulltime. It is, however, significantly cheaper and the average buyer doesn't no the difference.

I read the manual carefully again and here is what it says:
Four wheel drive system (part-time 4WD models)
H4 (high speed position, four wheel drive)
Greater traction than two wheel drive.
For when you experience a loss of power, such as wheel slipping.

It doesn't say anything about the road surface or binding problem. How can a customer know about this problem by reading the manual though?!

If your tires were slipping on the dry pavement while parking then it was okay to be in 4wd due to loss of traction. If it was hard to turn and your weren't losing traction your shouldn't be in that mode

It isn't a "problem." It is how part-time systems work.

If that is all that the manual said, then, yes, the manual is insufficient.

No. There is no damage. Stop worrying.

I hope so. Cuz I don't want the saleman who told me to drive part-time 4WD on any surface forever to loose his job! Life is not easy for everyone.
