A couple of questions re. lift & LT285/70/17 tires

Hi all. I'm looking to purchase a new 4Runner in the next month or so (V6-4wd SR5), and I'm already considering a few mods, including lift and taller/wider tires.

I'm interested in lifting the truck, primarily to level it out, as well as to improve the vehicle dynamics as I've read a bit about the amount of nose dive under hard braking. Therefore, I've been considering the Bilstein 5100 shocks that lift the front about 1.75", while keeping the stock springs. I'm also considering installing 285/70/17's on the stock rims.

Does anyone else on the forum have this setup? For those that do, can you tell me a bit about the overall ride quality. Also, how badly do the 285's rub in the front, and does moving the inside fender liner forward take care of the problem?

I also had a more general question regarding tires. Most of the 285/70/17 tires available are D or E load rated, and as a result, the tires are 10-12 lbs heavier than the stock tires. For those that have D/E-rated 285/70/17's tires, assuming the additional diameter and rolling mass would tax the engine a bit more, have you noticed a decrease in overall acceleration?

Many thanks in advance for your replies. Thanks!!!!

-Alex

You can run 285s on the stock SR5 wheel, but you will be out of the manufacture recommended width. The SR5 wheel is only 7" and the manufactures recommend min of 7.5". Yeah its only a half of an inch, but i dont want to have a bead pop off on the highway. You could always get a set of the TE wheels, which are 7.5" wide, for peace of mind.

I am lifting my SR5 with OW/Radflo 2.5 kit (its in the works) and then going to get a set of wheels 17x8 or 17x9, depending on my final decision. And of course 285/70/17s to make it look oh so much better, and work better off in the dirt.

I have a set of 2010 SR5 rims with BFG AT's on them that I am selling and they are 17x7J. I doubt they changed them but who knows?
I also have a set of 2008 Sport Ed. rims with BFG AT's and they are 17x7 1/2

You can tell on Toyota truck rims as it's cast in the back of the rim when they made it.Easy to look and check yours.
Do you have a lift ?Do you have rubbing with the 285 BFG's when backing up and wheels cut like when backing out of a parking place?

First pic is the SR5 and the second is the Sport Ed.

Can someone post a sticky with FAQs on lift and tire combos. I'm sure the questions are answered in a variety of posts but it would be handy if it were right on the front page.

For instance, largest tire size on stock SR5, Limited and TE? Largest tire with different lift combos?

Just an idea.

Largest tire size on a stock runner is 275/70-17 (not sure what the aspect ratio would be for the 20s) and then getting into lifts only you wallet will decide how big you can go.

Thanks for the replies...

Regarding the tires - has anyone noticed a difference in acceleration given the 285/70/17's, especially D/E load rated tires given the additional weight and diameter?

I'm considering the Firestone Destination A/Ts and see they have a standard load tire, as well as an E rated tire (44lbs vs 52lbs). I wonder if you take a more noticable hit in acceleration on the heavier tires.

Thanks in advance for the replies.
