Hi folks, I just joined the forum, and I know this is an old thread, but I wanted to resurrect it as I'd like to "talk factory Bridgestone H/T tires". I just picked up my 2020 4Runner Venture today, and I will very soon be swapping the H/T tires for something more A/T (I spend a decent amount of time fishing/hunting down logging/fire/4WD roads), and I also will be trying to get a tire place to give me some kind of credit for the H/T tires.

A question for you all here: Why does Toyota put these Dueller H/Ts (essentially a street tire) on a 4Runner (especially a Venture trim) in the first place? Are there enough people who would not take a Venture/Off-Road trim off road to justify factory street tires? Just curious why they didn't come with at least A/T tires.

I believe in the beginning they did it so it didn't take away sales from the TRD Pro. It is an option now on a TRD Off-road (TRD wheels and Nitto Terra Grapplers), but I guess not if you get your version.

Interesting, as the Venture is essentially the same as the TRD Off-Road Premium, with some cosmetic differences. Oh well.....As good a place as any to start with mods (i.e. new tires).

I hated the Bridgestone Has from day 1. Just replaced them with Falken Wilkpeak A/T3s E-load 10 ply. Night and day.... love the look and feel. Road noise is minimal..

Hey, another attempt to resurrect this thread. Just picked up my 2020 TRD ORP and got these Bridgestone stock tires. They look like a highway tire and I am also worried about performance off road.

Where do I start by exploring other options that are more suited to off road / snow use? (but not crazy rock crawling). Should I run with these for a while and replace them only after a while?

I never had good experience with the stock tires on new Toyotas. In my other vehicles, they worn very quickly.

In general, if you plan on off-road usage at all, ditch the Bridgestones as quick as you can. There are a lot of threads on this forum you can check out for recommendations.

Some popular options are BF Goodrich KO2s, Toyo Open Country AT3s, Falken Wildpeak AT3Ws, Firestone Destination AT2s, and Grabber ATX. Need to think about your overall usage case (for instance, do you want severe snow rated tires, do you care about getting maximum durability for wheeling in a place like AZ, CO, or UT, or are you simply looking for a good all around beefier option).

In general there are a lot of decent to good tires out there these days and not that many bad ones to be honest. I run a Yokohoma AT-X since I wanted something extremely durable for wheeling in the Southwest that was close to a MT without some of the MT sacrifices (crappy snow performance, crappy highway performance, etc.).

Advice I got was go with the passenger tires for 20K or whatever you can get out of them. Then go for what you want. I do not offroad but live in snow country and have found Michelin Defenders to be good for year round use on road and on dirt NFS roads. That said 2 of the 4 I bought 2 years ago were out of spec and were replaced by Michelin, 3/5 Goodyears (good for a year) on my 2017 Chevy Duramax were out of spec. Dealer graciously replaced them with Michelins. 2/4 were also out of spec. Me thinks Michelin has let humans into their q/c pristine manufacturing facility.

All tires are a compromise. You just have to decide what your priorities are.

I swapped out my OEM tires before 300 miles. It took me that long to consider the various options, and decide what my priorities were.

So far, I'm pleased with my choice of Yokohama Geolandar A/T G015 LT 265/70R17 E's. The are much stronger than the OE tires, and seem to be just as quiet. They are great in rain and snow. Balanced easily with no vibration. Due to the heavier construction they are a bit firmer riding than stock, but not bad.

So I gained in wet and snow and off-road traction, and more durability, at the small expense of a bit of ride comfort.

Swapped out stock Bridgestones for Falken Wildpeaks AT/3 around 20K miles. They were great off-road AT tires but after 40K miles they started making noise which is not uncommon for an AT tire. Recently purchased and installed Pirellis Scorpion AT plus tires. Very smooth tires and they're slightly lighter than the Falkens. IMO, Falkens are great for off-road and on road purpose. Pirellis so far are for on road and minimal off-road duties.

I’m considering the Yoko Geolandar X-AT or Cooper Discoverer AT3 LT in 265/70/17, E.

What size and load rating are you running with the X-AT’s?

How is the on pavement ride quality and what psi do you have them at?

I have the X-AT in 265/70R17-E. I believe all X-ATs currently being produced are E-load and they are pretty limited on sizes at this point.

I have not experimented with pressure too much on them but basically have had them between 35 and 40 psi so far. Did some decent offroading in Colorado a few weeks back (Imogene, Ophir and some less intense stuff) and didn't see a need to air them down to be honest (I generally will air down in sand, but not always in rocks as I prefer not to lose the ground clearance currently).

On pavement ride quality has actually surpassed my expectations. I've run a lot of miles with an E-load Falken on my previous 4Runner and E-load 33 inch Exo Grapplers from Nitto on my 2012 JKU I had before that so I guess I'm kind of desensitized to the firmer tires at this point. I actually found the SL load Terra Grapplers that came on the Pro to feel kind of squishy and sloppy (and watching how much they flexed on rocks here in AZ did not inspire confidence that the sidewalls were going to hold up to moderate Southwest wheeling).

I think at this point I’m leaning more towards the X-AT’s.

I have a 2020 Venture and it came with the Bridgestone H/Ts. I am going to get the Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo 3's in a month or two for better snow/wet handling and for some off-road use. I had the H/Ts on a 2012 Tacoma before this T4R and they sucked in wet and snow conditions and I had to eventually get the Blizzak tires for winter use. That was a hassle twice a year to get them put on, taken off before and after snow season. Had older Bridgestone A/Ts on a 1995 T4R and they were awesome in the snow and off road. Traded that for a 2004 T4R and have been kicking myself ever since, but I do like the 2020 Venture.

Bridgestone H/T Duellers

Picked up my 2020 SR5 with the Dueller H/T's in January and drove all over WY, UT, WA, ID, MT chasing powder. No problems with these over many passes, in sloppy icy rutted parking lots and in 6" of fresh on routes to backcountry trailheads. Many trips this spring and summer in Winthrop/Mazama on rough doubletrack and FS roads. No problems. I'll prolly switch to Cooper Discoverers at some point. Although there is a French Q-Tip shop (Les Schwab) very close to me. Just my $.02.

Tires

Picked up a 21 limited first thing I did at 1000 miles was changed the shitty Dualer tires. I went with Toyo Open Country AT 3. I live in Minot ND. Winters can suck up here. It was sliding all over the road no grip. Toyo’s fixed that problem.
